    Review Star Trek Beyond (2016)

I thought it was fun but a bit formulaic; much of the humour comes from the unlikely teaming up of Spock and Bones. Sofia Boutella is a promising addition as Jaylah but the film is only a slight improvement over the disappointing INTO DARKNESS. The first film is, imo, the best of the three, by far.

Review Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

It was enjoyable, if overly busy, and could’ve been a lot better with more cogent storytelling. Rowling may’ve felt too close to her source- thereby a reluctance to cut some of the fat. It’ll please HP fans for sure; it just never soars. Production values and visual effects are brilliant with...

Fun The Last Movie That You Watched?

Yeah ANACONDA for me too. The unwarranted sequel is less tacky but even more dumb!

Review Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

More of the same as the original really. Undemanding, juvenile with some good visual effects. Stan Lee's cameo (trying to convince the doorman he's Stan Lee!) is the most memorable thing about it!

Review Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Solid and straightforward enough, bit grittier than I anticipated. I thought the plot was thin though and padded out by the screenwriters but I liked how they focused on themes of sacrifice and heroism (esp in the surprisingly downbeat climax). Much preferred TFA.

Fun What are you listening to?

That's a coincidence; he did the music for Ken Loach's POOR COW, which I watched recently.

Review Planet of the Apes (1968)

Well thank goodness for small mercies. It prevented any sequels from happening, so there's that!

Review Planet of the Apes (1968)

No, I think it was Earth as we know it, but the future had been altered. Or something!!:emoji_confused:

Review Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

    Yeah it's a bit 'meh'

Review Planet of the Apes (1968)

The ending of Tim Burton's is what makes it an atrocity. Poor Abe (or should I say, Ape?) Lincoln:emoji_confounded:

Review Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

I thought CRYSTAL SKULL succeeded in capturing the spirit of the first three films, plus the stunt work and action set-pieces were terrific; but the storytelling just didn't pass muster. Too bad.

    Fun Sir Alfred Hitchcock

REAR WINDOW was the pic that made me fall in love with older movies. I watched it as an 11 year-old and was transfixed. As if I was right there with Jimmy Stewart, and I (and the audience) only knew what he knew. So, that's my favourite by a mile. Other shout-outs to PSYCHO, SHADOW OF A DOUBT...

    Review Vincent Price

My 5 favourite pics starring VP; 1) Tomb of Ligeia, 2) Masque of the Red Death, 3) House of Wax, 4) Pit and the Pendulum, 5) The Fly

Fun The Last Movie That You Watched?

I watched SNOWDEN last night. Was disappointed. CITIZENFOUR was waaay more informative and enjoyable imo

Review Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)

Clumsy and tepid sequel imo; hokey comic-strip action, rather than thoughtful, serious sci-fi

Review Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)

If you put the preposterousness of it to one side, there's plenty to enjoy here. It’s a scathing satire on (then) modern life, riffing many social problems of the time such as nuclear activity, (lack of) women’s rights, race and fashion.

Review Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

More of the same really, an enjoyable adventure that captures the essence of the TV series. It could've done with a bit more flair, maybe that's down to Nimoy being director too.

Review Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

The effects-laden, cerebral nature of the original is replaced with a more straightforward revenge plot. Nimoy is in great form with Montal-ban a fine villain- but I felt a sense of anti-climax at the end.

Review Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Has a harder edge and more darkened imagery than its predecessor, this sci-fi epic still maintains the spirit and adventure of the original film. The best of the franchise imo

Review Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

The tone is light-hearted and humorous as the characters face a complete culture shock and we see their differing eccentricities. It gets a bit hokey at times but is, on a whole, an enjoyable affair.
