Much like Matt Smith, he already kinda looks like an alien so probably excellent casting.

And he gets to create this brand new alien from scratch too which should help (though how they explain that aliens lack of existence in TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager will be interesting... it's the Xindi all over again).

There are several species from the eras of STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE or STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES that aren't seen in later eras. I expect it's a big galaxy out there with a large number of intelligent species.

Thoughts on the casting of Sonequa Martin-Green as Lt. Cmdr Rainsford?

Star Trek: Discovery has found its lead actress. Sonequa Martin-Green, best known as Sasha Williams in The Walking Dead and Tamara in Once Upon a Time, has been cast in the still as-of-yet-unnamed lead role of a lieutenant commander (aka Number One) on the Discovery.

Martin-Green will be the first black actress to lead a Star Trek series (unlike previous series, Discovery's lead character will not be a captain). According to Entertainment Weekly, who first broke the news, she will continue her role on The Walking Dead.

Sam Vartholomeos (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Following) is Ensign Connor, "a Junior Officer in Starfleet Academy assigned to the starship Shenzhou."

His only two previous credits appear to be The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and The Following.

However, he does appear to have a channel on youtube, but with only one video posted three years ago. This appears to be Sam...

Like he's appeared out of nowhere? Perhaps like someone who has only existed in that era for a limited amount of time?
