What are the Pillars made of & how is it that they are in a row?
They are made of gas and heavier compounds from earlier generations of stars and planets.
That's why it's a stellar nursery. Gravity works to bring the interstellar gas and heavier compounds together to form a new generation of stars and planets.
As for why they are lined up in a row, I couldn't really say. Perhaps it's simply an effect of the astronomical forces at work in that region of space. There would be quite a few immense gravitational fields competing against each other in that area.
It would certainly take more than a five year mission to explore, study and understand everything that's going on there.
