The red centre is the remains of a star, known as a stellar core. Eventually it will become a white dwarf. Something quite similar should happen to our own sun in about 4 000 000 000 to 5 000 000 000 years from now.

The outer circle of matter were the outer layers of the star that were shed during the explosion. Eventually, that matter may coalesce with matter from other dying stars inside stellar nurseries and help to form a new generation of stars and planets. That's what happened to make you and me possible.

To quote one of my heroes: "We are all made of star-stuff."
Who might that hero be?

Yes, I know of him. Not read any of his books, but he is by far the most expert on the cosmos.

He wrote Contact which they made a movie from that I liked...

COSMOS had a huge effect on me when I was young. It opened my eyes to the wonders of the universe and answered so many questions that I didn't even know that I had.

CONTACT is one of the best SF films I've ever seen. For me, it's up there with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

However, for me, his most impressive achievement involved him driving a car full of children from coast to coast - east to west I think. And while he was doing that, he wrote a book as well. I have nothing but admiration for the man.

The Pillars of Creation - a stellar nursery.

Each pinprick of light inside the cloud represents a star with a forming planetary system.
