Yes you do get a promotion. No the site is not into any sort of problems. The donation is not for mantaining the site but for expanding it into much more.

Ok but decided to stop coming to sites until I can find site EVERYBODY goes to. Far too many IMDB copies out there/few users in each.

I doubt if they'll ever all assemble on one website. Some websites will succeed and some will fail. The members of the failed websites will again seek out new communities to call home. In time, many of them may reunite with each other - while many others will not. All we can do is carry on the best we can and hope for some good fortune along the way.

No they don't but then again, this is pretty common in forums. It is to be expected.
