I feel the need... the need to ask... why bother?

Why bother now after all this time?

I enjoyed the original and remember it fondly, but...

There's as much need for this as there is for Ghostbusters 3 and Bill & Ted 3 both of which have been continually teased by those involved. I'll be honestly surprised if there's really enough interest in any of these to see them made.

The original films - and their sequels - were good and they had their time of popularity with the public. They were fun and now it's time to move on to something new and fresh.

Well, if not fresh, at least new...

Well, if not new, at least... Oh, never mind.

Yeah not likely. More superheros, Indiana Jones, Die Hard, etc. Probably someone, somewhere is sitting in an office pondering "is it time for a Gone With the Wind, sequel, prequel or gritty reboot?"

Depressing, but true...

However, I can live in hope - no matter how deluded that might be.

Kosinski Tipped To Direct “Top Gun 2”

“Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski has emerged as the front-runner to direct the “Top Gun” sequel for Paramount and Skydance Pictures reports Variety.

No official offer has been made, but insiders believe one is imminent. Cruise met with several potential helmers prior to and while filming “Mission Impossible: 6” in London to ensure the sequel is ready to go after production wrapped.

Kosinski and star Tom Cruise previously teamed on the sci-fi tale “Oblivion” but that didn’t guarantee him the placement, rather it was his vision of where the sequel will go that got Cruise excited.

The new film is set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters and explores the end of an era of dogfighting.

The hiring news follows on from Cruise recently confirming to an Australian talk show that the sequel was moving forward and would hopefully shoot at the start of next year. At last report Justin Marks (“The Jungle Book”) is penning the film while David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer will produce.

Val Kilmer Ready to Bring Iceman Back For Top Gun 2

Val-Kilmer-Tom-Cruise-in-Top-Gun.jpg

Val Kilmer says he’s ready to bring Iceman back to Top Gun 2, now that Tom Cruise has announced the long-awaited sequel is taking flight.

Released in 1986, Top Gun was a definitive movie in many respects.

Directed by the late Tony Scott, the Navy fighter jet thriller not only scaled new heights in the action-adventure genre, it took a star on the rise with Cruise and made him an international superstar.

But Top Gun didn’t just turn on the burners for Cruise: Virtual unknown actors like Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan, and Tim Robbins had memorable supporting roles that pushed their careers into the spotlight; and Kilmer, also a relative newcomer, nearly stole the show as Iceman, the chief competitor of Maverick (Cruise) in the Top Gun flight program.

While the idea of Top Gun sequel has been batted around for years and seemed to be taking shape in 2015, Cruise announced Tuesday that Top Gun 2 is finally getting made, and will film within the next year.

Top Gun 2
picked up even more steam Wednesday when word surfaced that Tron: Legacy filmmaker Joseph Kisinkski, who directed Cruise in 2013 sci-fi thriller, Oblivion, as a front runner to take the helm of the sequel.

With the long dormant project coming together so fast, Kilmer didn’t waste any time declaring his interest in reprising the role of Iceman.

Kilmer posted a photo and message for Cruise on Instagram Wednesday, saying, “friends said it’s official – #TOPGUN2 was announced today. I’m ready Tom- still got my top gun plaque! Still got the moves! Still got it!”

Cruise Talks “Top Gun 2” Title, Tone, Score Details

cruise-reveals-top-gun-2-title-tone-score-details-696x464.jpg

Out doing “The Mummy” promotion, actor Tom Cruise has spoken with Access Hollywood about what’s shaping up to be one of his next projects – the sequel to 1986 Navy pilot classic “Top Gun”.

The project, which has been in development for years and stalled when Tony Scott passed away, is now back on track to film within a year. Cruise tells the outlet the plan is to keep the tone, formula and score of the original film intact here:

“We’re gonna have the same tone that we had with the first one. Stylistically it’s gonna be the same. We’re gonna have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer. Aviators are back. The need for speed, we’re gonna have big machines. It’s gonna be a competition film like the first one, and it’s gonna be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one but a progression for Maverick.”

At last report Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise on “Oblivion,” is in talks to direct. Cruise also reveals the current title:

“It’s not gonna be called Top Gun 2 it’s gonna be Top Gun: Maverick. I didn’t want a number. You don’t need a number.”

Should “Top Gun: Maverick” go into production within a year as Cruise has been saying, then expect a likely Summer 2019 release.

I'd say that Anthony Edwards is the lucky one in this scenario.

At least he got killed off in the first film.

“Top Gun 2” Might Get Another Volleyball Scene

When it comes to homoeroticism on screen, nothing much tops the memorable volleyball scene from Tony Scott’s original 1986 fighter pilot drama “Top Gun”. Could the upcoming sequel feature something like that again? It just might.

After years stuck in development hell, Tom Cruise finally confirmed last month that a sequel titled “Top Gun: Maverick” was happening with filming to get underway within a year.

Cruise will be returning as ace pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the follow-up which is said to tackle the need for Navy pilots in an age of drone warfare. However, Cruise has been adamant in interviews lately that it will retain many of the hallmarks of the original. Does this include the volleyball scene?

“There’s gonna be jets – very fast jets. There’s gonna be an aircraft carrier, maybe two. And a wide range of jets. It’s gonna have music… We have a soundtrack. There’s gonna be actors in it. [And a] motorcycle – definitely [a] motorcycle. [There] may be a volleyball scene. Maybe. We’ll see. I have not told anyone in the world as much as I’ve just told you right now.”

The original film had a worldwide box office haul of over $350 million on a budget of only $15 million. Joseph Kosinski (“Tron Legacy”) remains the front-runner to helm the project.

The story will deal with the rise of unmanned drones and pilots becoming obsolete.

The July 12th 2019 date has it opening in between the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” sequel the week before and the live-action “The Lion King” the week after.

“Top Gun 2” Gets New Scribe, Retains Start Date

A sequel to Tony Scott’s iconic 1980s action feature “Top Gun” has been in development for many years, but only recently has it picked up enough steam that it’s finally happening.

At last report, “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski will helm the film which is going by the working title of “Top Gun: Maverick” and is slated for a July 12th 2019 release. The story is said to deal with the rivalry between the old guard of fighter pilots and the drone controllers rendering them obsolete.

Now, German film site FilmStarts via (Slashfilm) has offered a brief update on the film courtesy of producer Jerry Bruckheimer. First up, “American Hustle” screenwriter Eric Warren Singer is working on a polish of Justin Marks’ script right now before the film goes into production.

Next, Bruckheimer says he doesn’t think that Tom Cruise’s recent injury on the set of the sixth “Mission: Impossible” film will delay the start date of filming and things remain on track to begin filming in January or February next year. No change is planned to the release date at this time.

Bruckheimer Talks “Top Gun” Sequel Pressure

The upcoming sequel to 1986’s iconic Tony Scott film “Top Gun” is finally on the way with Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer slated to get to work on it within the next few months.

In a new interview with Metro, Bruckheimer says he’s very aware that “Top Gun: Maverick” needs to be special and the bar they have to clear is far higher than a lot of the other sequels he’s worked on:

“I’ll tell ya, any movie you make has pressure there, and when you have an iconic movie like Top Gun you know the bar is really high. But we try to raise the bar in everything we do so it’s all about getting enormously talented people to work on it, and Tom is such a gifted not only actor, but also he produced this thing and he’s got a real sense of what the audience wants and what he likes.”

Bruckheimer also says another reason for the film to make money is that the marketplace is so much more competitive these days in terms of getting people’s attention:

“Audiences don’t change, they just want really good entertainment. And what you find is that there’s so many other ways that they can spend their time, between video games, sporting events and television has been phenomenal with streaming and regular channels, cable, so there’s a lot of choices for them. The movie has to be really special and different to get them to leave their house and go to the film.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is expected to film early next year for a Summer 2019 release.

Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” will begin shooting this Summer, specifically in July with the shoot to run through until around Thanksgiving.
Tom Cruise leads the film and was previously circling the role of a stuntman in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” but Brad Pitt was cast in that part instead.

Tom Cruise has teased the start of production on the “Top Gun” sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” which is slated to open July 12th next year.

Cruise tweeted a picture on the first day of filming on the Joseph Kosinski-directed project, a throwback picture showing Cruise’s iconic character looking at his F-14A Tomcat.

German composer Harold Faltermeyer, who created the original’s iconic score, is also returning. Cruise, David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer are producing.
