CONAN THE DESTROYER (1984)

An epic sword-and-sorcery film directed by Richard Fleischer, based on a screenplay by Stanley Mann and a story by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway. It's the sequel to CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982) and features Arnold Schwarzenegger, Grace Jones, Wilt Chamberlain, Mako, Tracey Walter, Olivia d'Abo, Sarah Douglas and Andre the Giant.

Whilst it seems to be more polished in some aspects than its predecessor, it also seems to lack some of the first film's... "gravitas". However, it's still a very enjoyable follow-up.

RED SONYA (1985)

An epic sword-and-sorcery film - yes, another one - directed by Richard Fleischer and written by Clive Exton and George MacDonald Fraser. It's based on the character of the same name, created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, who itself is based mainly on the character Red Sonya of Rogatino, created by Robert E Howard. The soundtrack music is provided by the late, great Ennio Morricone.

This film is set in the same fictional universe and the same period of time as the Conan films. It features Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sandahl Bergman, Paul Smith, Ronald Lacey, Ernie Reyes, Jr and Brigitte Nielsen. Despite it being considered an inferior film with a poor rating, I found it to be a surprisingly enjoyable and very satisfying little film. I thought it had plenty of action and adventure and it also gave me a few good laughs... and you can't ask for much more than that.

FIRST BLOOD (1982)

An action film directed by Ted Kotcheff, based on the 1972 novel of the same name by David Morrell and co-written by Michael Kozoll, William Sackheim and Sylvester Stallone, who also stars as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo. The film also features Richard Crenna, Brian Dennehy, Jack Starrett and David Caruso. The soundtrack was provided by Jerry Goldsmith.

The film is an action-packed, breath-taking thrill ride with an important social message concerning the struggle faced by war veterans after they've returned home from combat, but it's an extremely pale and timid imitation of the original novel.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982)

An epic sword-and-sorcery film directed by John Milius and written by Milius and Oliver Stone. It's based on the character Conan, created by Robert E Howard and features Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones, Sandahl Bergman, Ben Davidson, Gerry Lopez, Mako, Valerie Quennessen, William Smith, Nadiuska and Max von Sydow.

It's not for the feint of heart, especially in the final battle, where Conan and his allies take on all-comers. Brutal, bloody and brilliant.
