Netflix’s “The Haunting” Series Set For October
Netflix has announced an October 12th premiere date and released the first photos from “The Haunting of Hill House,” its upcoming ten-episode event series adaptation of one of the most famed pieces of gothic fiction ever created – Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name.
Previously adapted as movies titled “The Haunting” including Robert Wise’s raved about 1963 film, and Jan de Bont’s widely criticised and CG heavy 1999 film, the new 2018 series is expected to adopt the ‘less is more’ atmospheric approach of the book and first film.
However, it is also expected to be quite different from the novel in terms of story with a previously released synopsis describing it thus: “Hill House follows a family both in modern day and in the past as they deal with the ghosts, both literal and figurative, that have come to haunt them.”

The project hails from filmmaker Mike Flanagan who directed the very well-received “Hush” and Stephen King adaptation “Gerald’s Game” for Netflix. He’s bringing along several actors from those films onboard here with the ‘Hill House’ cast including Carla Gugino, Timothy Hutton, Henry Thomas, Michiel Huisman, Annabeth Gish, Elizabeth Reaser, Kate Siegel, and Lulu Wilson.

I'm just starting episode five, and it's pretty good. It's a slow burn, to be sure, so any young punk horror fans with their jump scares and MTV editing can stay away. It's a lot of non-linear story telling, which makes you have to pay close attention to what's going on, but the atmosphere is definitely on the creepy side. I'm well invested in it, and can't wait to see how this all pays off.
