Review The Ghosts Of Motley Hall -s01e04- Bad Lord William and the British Banana Company

A representative of the British Banana Company accidentally releases the ghost of Bad Lord William by removing a sword hidden in the wall of the Main Hall. William is a braggart and tries to take over Motley. Fanny finds Sir George's hidden brandy, and challenges Bad William to a duel.

I enjoyed this episode, but it was the first one where I questioned a little of the internal logic of the series and had me asking a couple of questions...

How can a ghost get drunk? Wouldn't the liquid pass straight through them and how would they digest it?

Duelling ghosts..... How could one kill the other? Maybe it would just be a point scoring victory. "If you had been alive, that would have killed you, Sir!!"

Not dissing the episode though. This was the usual good fun and I the character of Bad Lord William reminded me a little of Rik Mayall's Flash character from Blackadder.

Nice to see Peter Sallis again. At least he knows the place is definitely haunted now.

There is the potential of a return for Bad Lord William, but I get the impression we have seen the last of him.

Luckily who know who is not reviewing this show, he'll probably rip it to shreds. Yes there's inconsistency, it's not exactly clear what objects the ghosts can pick up or not. The swords were real and the wall panel was opened effortlessly by one of them at the end. But it's all just a bit of fun. I just love seeing these classic character actors giving their all. Makes me hope there is an afterlife , I would be happy to be earthbound with this gang.
Reginald Marsh, the boss from Terry and June, playing his usual type of role, in fact I can say it's virtually the same character. Perhaps he'll go back to Terry and say,
" had a damn queer experience in a house Terry, might be haunted"
Terry " ah June, my next project, I'm doing a bit of ghost hunting"
June " oh dear"

Yes, yet another crossover. Sir Dennis!

Yes, it would have been ripped to shreds by a certain person, to the point where we would say: "Okay, we get it, you don't like it!"

I think a lot of those old character actors had the edge over today's crop simply because they learned their craft the hard way. Not straight out of drama school into television, but through the hard grind of weekly rep in the theatre and a course in the harsh University of Life.

No flat, bland, emotionless acting from this lot.

And the same applies to the writers. They knew how to tell stories with entertaining characters that you actually could like.
