Review The Colin Baker Doctor

Some eras of JNTs reign were bad I admit, series 24 for instance! But if it wasn't for him I doubt there would have been a fuss made about the 20th anniversary or the return of key baddies like the Master or the Cybermen who were outside of the public interest at the time! And it was he that wanted to leave the show but his bosses wouldn't let him!!! So I think it was rough that he received the public's hate considering the effort he put into that show over the years!

Yeah, it sometimes seems as if there is a curse on Doctor Who, with it's catalogue of misery. Hartnell's dreadful illness. Troughton dying in costume (while bonking a fan apparently), Delgado's tragic demise, Colin's bad luck during his tenure - and JNT's slow decline. He was his own worst enemy a lot of the time, but didn't deserve the hate campaign from those fickle former associates. Saward can get lost too - although the show seems to have left it's mark on his life and career too, with his barely having written anything since. The book on JNT shows just what an a-hole Jonathan Powell was, with him saying things like: "I advised him not to sue (Eric Saward), but part of me was rejoicing, because I thought "Oh goodie! Another nail in his coffin". And "we let the show wither and die on the vine and if he withered and died with it, so much the better". Just awful, heartless, callous stuff.

That's not true surely? William Hartnell died in his costume while having sex with a fan? Never!!! He looked too infirm to have even held anyone's hand by that time let alone have sex with them!

Oh Gawd! I've done it again! Another verbal screw up! Sorry JB. Just one word (name) was missing. Have corrected the text now.

And, just for future people reading this wondering what went wrong....

It should have said this originally....

Hartnell's dreadful illness. Troughton dying in costume (while bonking a fan apparently)
But said this.....

Hartnell's dreadful illness dying in costume (while bonking a fan apparently)
Just one word can change everything! :emoji_cold_sweat:

Having said that, I can't get the image of a rampant Hartnell out of my head now!! :emoji_scream:

But yes, apparently JNT helped cover up the full truth behind Troughton's demise before the press of the day got hold of it and took the sensitive step of discreetly inviting the lady in question to the funeral. The JNT book mentions all this. I gather Tom in his bachelor days used to get a lot of requests off ladies to stay in costume on the job too!

Can't imagine Colin did - even if he chose to be unfaithful.

LADY: Oh Colin! Please wear the blue version!

COLIN: Are you sure you wouldn't prefer something all in black, madam? Or more Matrix-y?

You're joking!!! Troughton had sex with a fan while dressed in his Doctor Who costume!!!! I don't know what to make of that!!! I know he had an eye for the ladies and had two wives while secretly having a girlfriend on the side as well but is that actually true? It seems a bit seedy if so somehow! I'm a bit rabid in that way but unlike the Trought don't get many offers and I am married as well! Does anyone know whom the young lady was or is? Thanks for the info, Doc! :emoji_grinning::emoji_dancers::emoji_girl::emoji_open_mouth::emoji_open_mouth:

Well apparently from what I can make out, Patrick Troughton died after ordering or receiving breakfast in his hotel room in 1987 in Columbus Ohio, USA! There's no mention of a fan and him having sex with her! I think Pat wouldn't have done such a thing! It's got to be a wind-up!

It seems to have been a rumour that has travelled the fan grapevine over the years. One story I heard was that the lady in question was found wandering the corridors at the hotel saying repeatedly in shock: "I've killed Doctor Who! I've killed Doctor Who!" But we know how these stories can be baseless and distorted.

But eventually I found it mentioned in the JNT book by Richard Marson....

"One of John's favourite people was Patrick Troughton..... On 28th March, 1987, Troughton died on the job at an American convention in Columbus, Georgia. John used all his contacts and experience to deflect any potentially unwelcome press interest, managing the delicate situation with sensitivity and flair.... He persuaded the BBC to pay for a wake in the actor's memory.... inviting family, friends... From outside the BBC the guest list included former producer Peter Bryant and the American fan who had been with him when he died. Again, it was John at his best - kind, thoughtful and doing what he could to protect both the show he loved and an actor he admired and liked."

Below is Troughton, retiring for that night..... The last footage of him alive..... I find his final "'''bye 'bye!" very poignant....

I did read an interview with Mary Peach of ENEMY OF THE WORLD fame and she said that Troughton was asking her to have an affair with him, even though she was married and he had his various relationships on the go. I think she was attracted to him, but wasn't going to go there. I think their flirtatiousness is captured onscreen in the episode itself. :emoji_alien:

As for "the American fan who was with him when he died", alas history is silent. Or covered up.

It is possible that Marson has got all his sources wrong, reporting rumour as fact, but it is bizarre that such a rumour sprang up in the first place. We may never know for certain.

I just got back from a local small-scale comic con type event where amongst the guests of honour were Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Michael Jayston.

There was no stage, so there had been no panel of any kind. It was simply a case of them sitting at their respective tables along one side of the room and signing a selection of photographs for people. The rest of the large room was taken up with stalls selling the usual bobble heads and sci fi bric a brac.

I arrived towards the end. One of the stall holders was a friend, so after deciding that I did not want to pay five pounds for a slab of fudge and seeing how kind or otherwise time had been to the guests I wandered over to chat to him.

He explained that Mark Strickson was supposed to be there too, but had cancelled at the last moment. He also said that Colin had refused to be photographed by the local newspaper for some reason.

I already knew that Sylvester was meant to be the main guest today, but once again had pulled out of an appearance, prompting Colin to take his place and adding further fuel to the rumours of growing Dementia regarding Sylvester. I mused on the irony of Colin replacing Sylvester for a change.

As for the guests, Colin looked as blankly serious as ever - and frankly a little fed up - his body language pretty much saying that he had better things to do, but this was where the money was. My feeling was that any guest daring to ask him a question while handing over their loot, had better be prepared for a somewhat acerbic reply.

At the table next to him was - of course - Nicola, who exuded a youthful brightness, vitality, good humour and just all round niceness. wearing very secretarial black framed glasses. Her smile was radiant and genuine. She just gave off good vibes. My stall holder friend, always bubbling with observations, said that she had put her photo prices up to £20 on the day, even though the poster outside said it would be £15.

Next table along was the Valyard himself, Mister Jayston, looking white haired and somewhat hunched. He was, to be honest, looking his years and I had had to look closely to make sure it was indeed him.

There were two other guests... one who had played a Dalek or something in New Who and the other was from another series. I will look up who they were, maybe, but the fact is that they were irrelevant to me. The Sixth Doctor, Peri and the Valyard were sat there! That was all that mattered to me at this moment in time.

I could have got their autographed photos, but could think of nothing to say to them that they had not heard before. And I already had Colin's autographed photo from a few years before. No, today it was enough to see this echo of THE TRIAL OF A TIMELORD.

It came time to help my friend pack his stall away and take the boxes to the car. While packing the boxes I saw Colin and Nicola sat chatting away. You could see that they were as great friends as ever. Eventually they left together. The Valyard had already vanished. Perhaps he still had that teleporting around the beach power?

All that was left was the mystery of Sylvester...

And where was that wretched Turlough, as the Brigadier might say?

I saw Michael Jayston at a convention of sorts years ago in Milton Keynes and he did look a bit haggard bless him! Though he could still play the Valeyard in any future Doctor Who series unlike Colin who looks absolutely nothing like himself from the eighties! Sylvester has dementia?

It's just a rumour about Sylvester that has been doing the rounds of convention halls. I keep hoping for him to pop up and prove it wrong by sounding as lucid, but wacky, as ever.

Colin just gave off an air of being fed up and a stereotypical grumpy old man.

I wonder if he ever really recovered from the sacking? Going to the SUN newspaper was a huge mistake I think as he seemed to be blackballed from appearing on telly for years after.

I loved him at the time as the Doctor, but now I think he was possibly miscast and the costume should never have been used.A theatre stage performance on a small television screen just seems a huge misstep to me now, looking back. Colin always seemed to be obviously "ACTING". It pulls me out of the story.

It also makes me wonder who we may have missed as a better Sixth Doctor....

I think Colin should really be grateful that he has an income source for life in one way or another and stop resenting Tom Baker too while he is at it. And not publicly diss Peter Davison as "talking rubbish" either, helping in Doc 5 being driven off twitter.

There is just a curmudgeonly air to him - more noticeable in recent years, when he should perhaps instead be counting his blessings?

Sounds like there are stories being told of Sylvester getting lost while driving, even in very familiar places, and just acting distant and aloof instead of his normal self. I, too, hope it's just rumors, because I love the guy and his Doctor.

Totally agree! Colin was more an actor in a role than both Davo and Sylvester with all his shouting and quoting while they seemed to be more natural! Not that Davison or Sylvester are that exempt from criticism either! Colin has done himself a lot of harm in the eyes of the fans by not only validating the new Who but also condemning those that cannot accept her in the role! Well that's up to him but for me the first four Doctors were as natural as a breath of fresh air and are the real Time Lords of the show! I still get goose bumps from those eighteen years even if the next eight are acceptable if not as good!

Very funny indeed although I doubt that Leonard Nimoy had ever heard of Blakes 7 to be honest! I knew that Gerry Anderson would go mad when the words Doctor Who were used though....

We were lucky back in 1975 as we could watch Space 1999, the new ITV series on Thursday nights on ATV where as everyone else had to miss it if they were more interested in Doctor Who on BBC1! Then after Who had finished then we could rewatch a bit of the Space 1999 episode again! :emoji_laughing:

This event took place during the hiatus, between season 22 and 23.

And while, on this occasion, it is Peter Davison accompanying him, at about 8:30 JNT repeats Colin's wish to play the role for "Seven years and one month" in order to beat Tom Baker's record....
