New “Star Wars” Films Aren’t Following A Plan

new-star-wars-films-arent-planned-out-696x464.jpg

Since the announcement of the new trilogy that began with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the long-held belief has been that Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy and the various people working on the “Star Wars” films had at least a rough idea of where they were going.

After all, wasn’t the whole point of Lucasfilm having a ‘story group’ division to settle on continuity and create at least a guide, if not full story treatments, for all three interlinked films to be settled on before or during the production of ‘Force Awakens’?

Looks like that’s not the case. In some recent tweets, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson has revealed that there was no planned out story beyond ‘The Force Awakens’ when he was hired to helm ‘Last Jedi’ and if there was, he wasn’t beholden to anything bar what was established in the J.J. Abrams film.

A fan asked about a quote in the recent Vanity Fair story in which Johnson said he was given a lot of freedom for ‘Last Jedi,’ and wanted to know if some of the story was already planned. Johnson replied: “Nope”. The fan then pressed: “But how do I reconcile that with this? Some sense of where the saga was going?” to which Johnson replied: “I’m sure they talked about where it might go early on, but when they came to me there was no mapped story presented beyond The Force Awakens.”

That may give some fans pause but should excite others as it shows a level of trust in the filmmaker to make the specific story he wants to tell and giving him essentially free reign to take the story in a fresh direction. It also shoots down any arguments as to the story and characters following a specific template if there are no plans for Johnson, Episode 9 director Colin Trevorrow or anyone else after that to follow.

Will Star Wars 8 Ending Rip-Off Empire Strikes Back Cliffhanger?

empire-strikes-back-ending-screenshot.jpg

A new leak is suggesting that Rian Johnson will have Star Wars: The Last Jedi end on a cliffhanger, much like The Empire Strikes Back. The Last Jedi is slowly getting closer to release and new leaks are springing up from all kinds of sources. Some of these sources are inside and some of them are just dudes in a basement somewhere pontificating or just flat-out making things up, trying to earn some YouTube cash. This leaker tends to ruffle some feathers whenever he pops up in Star Wars conversations, so we'll definitely take this one with a healthy loaf of portion bread.

Ladies and gentleman, I bring you the new leak from the infamous Mike Zeroh YouTube account. The intel this time around is coming from a French dubber and this dubber has shed some light on a possible ending for The Last Jedi. Zeroh says "apparently at the end of the film, the fate of Kylo Ren and Rey will be unknown. This will leave us wondering where Rey is going and where Ren is going." Now this does seem to indicate the presence of a cliffhanger in the movie, which would make it pretty close to The Empire Strikes Back, a movie that Rian Johnson has said that The Last Jedi will be nothing like. Reverse psychology perhaps?

Mr. Zeroh also claims Daisy Ridley (Rey) recently said that The Last Jedi will leave many unanswered questions, but there are also reports where the actress reveals that many questions will be answered. There seems to be a bit of a miscommunication going on in that department. The rest of the video is used as a device to try and figure out if Rey turns to the Dark Side and if Kylo Ren switches to the Force, which I have to say, sounds pretty ridiculous no matter how you slice it.

The new "leak" comes after it was revealed that Star Wars 9 director Colin Trevorrow requested that Last Jedi director Rian Johnson shoot an extra scene while they were in a certain location for a possible inclusion in star Wars 9. What that scene is, we may never know, but it was more about Trevorrow talking the collaborative spirit between himself, Johnson, and J.J. Abrams. Rian Johnson also made a small request from Abrams to swap out BB-8 for R2-D2 on the journey to Ahch-To to meet up with Luke Skywalker, which hints that R2 will have more of a purpose on the island than previously thought.

Alright, so there's the leak, or speculation, or whatever you want to call it. It seems pretty unlikely that Rian Johnson would spend the earlier part of this year fighting off rumors of The Empire Strikes Back comparisons to go ahead a leave The Last Jedi as cliffhanger, exactly like how Empire ends. It would certainly be unexpected though. Watch Zeroh's video for yourself below and leave him a thumbs up or down, whatever. The next Last Jedi trailer is coming in July, but whether it will land at D23, or debut a week later at Comic-Con is anyone's guess at this point.

The fact that it may end on a cliffhanger (which I would have thought was a fairly logical move for part 2 of a 3 part story) doesn't make it in any way similar to Empire any more than the fact that Matrix Reloaded ended on a cliffhanger made that movie similar to Empire.

New Details On Del Toro’s “Last Jedi” Character

new-details-on-del-toros-last-jedi-character-696x464.jpg

The details just keep flowing from EW’s major cover story on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” with the newest article revealing details about Benicio del Toro’s mysterious character known as ‘DJ’.

All that we know before now are his initials, that he’s neither a hero or villain, and that he’ll be in scenes set in the casino city of Canto Bight.

Actor John Boyega says his character of Finn and Kelly Marie Tran’s mechanic character Rose Tico will, on a mission to the city, encounter DJ:

“We just need a codebreaker and he’s the best in the galaxy. Unfortunately, he’s very dodgy and only in it for financial gain. He doesn’t fight for any side. He has distinct opinions. The Resistance bombs the First Order one day, the First Order bombs the Resistance on another. It’s an ongoing war that will never end. For him, he’s trying to benefit off of that – which doesn’t make him the person you want to trust.”

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens on December 15th.

“Last Jedi” Leia & Poe Bond Explained

last-jedi-leia-poe-bond-explained-696x464.jpg

More information from EW’s new “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” issue today, this time dealing with the late Carrie Fisher’s General Leia and her arc for the film.

Director Rian Johnson says Leia has been defined by loss throughout the whole “Star Wars” saga, starting with the loss of Alderaan. With her husband now dead at the hands of her son, the suffering she’s gone through will be touched upon:

“She’s just taken hit after hit, and she’s borne it, and she focuses on moving forward and the task at hand… watching the film, there’s going to be a very emotional reaction to what she does in this movie.”

Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron becomes “in some ways a surrogate son for Leia” says the actor as she also sees Poe as someone with the potential to become a great leader of the Resistance and so encourages him in that direction. Isaac says:

“Poe’s arc is one of evolving from a heroic soldier to a seasoned leader, to see beyond the single-mindedness of winning the battle to the larger picture of the future of the galaxy. I think Leia knows she won’t be around forever and she, with tough love, wants to push Poe to be more than the badass pilot, to temper his heroic impulses with wisdom and clarity.”

The Resistance itself meanwhile has changed, they’re now more akin to the Rebel Alliance indicates Johnson:

“A small band that’s now cut off, on its own, and hunted when the Republic is shattered… [they’re] isolated, and they’re very, very vulnerable. [They’re] put in a pressure cooker right away, and relationships crack and strain under that pressure.”

Despite Fisher’s death, her role will not be retroactively changed and those involved say her impact will be felt for years to come.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens in cinemas on December 15th.

New Details On Kylo Ren, Phasma In “Last Jedi”

new-details-on-kylo-ren-phasma-in-last-jedi-696x464.jpg

We’ve been hearing about both the new and intrepid returning heroes we’ll see in Rian Johnson’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” but what about the villains?

EW has done a piece on the antagonists of the new era saga – Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren (aka. Ben Solo) and Gwendoline Christie‘s chrome stormtrooper character Captain Phasma. Johnson says Kylo being beaten by Rey in ‘Force Awakens’ will take its emotional toll on the already unstable character:

“He’s definitely been knocked off base. The defeat that he had at the end of The Force Awakens, but even bigger than that, his huge defining act which, spoiler alert, is the murder of his father… that’s the more interesting thing to dive into. How has he dealt with that in his head? Where is he at in terms of that act and what does that mean for him?”

As for Phasma, Johnson confirms she will play a larger role in the film, but her backstory won’t be explored:

“Gwendoline Christie is one of my favorite people, and you get to see her in action which I think is going to be really fun. That character is just so damn cool looking. Like, okay, let’s see what we can do with her. Let’s put her in action and see what happens.”

While she gets more screentime, one character who will get less is Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata whom Johnson confirms has a smaller role here than her part in ‘Force Awakens’.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens on December 15th.

“Last Jedi” Vehicles

last-jedi-vehicles-han-solo-title-leak-696x464.jpg

A look at two of the new vehicles used by the First Order in Rian Johnson’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” have been revealed via Star Wars Show today.

One is the ‘Dreadnought’, a 7.6km-long “mandatory four class warship and has two enormous orbital auto cannons which can be used for larger-scale bombardments, along with 24 point defense anti-aircraft cannons.

The other is AT-M6, the ‘All Terrain Megacalibur Six’ – a mobile heavy artillery walker that’s a lot bigger than a standard AT-AT, and has movement more akin to a simian as opposed to the more elephant-like gait of the original AT-ATs. Check them out in the video:

Dern’s “Star Wars” Character Is Omnisexual?

hqdefault.jpg

derns-star-wars-character-is-omnisexual-696x464.jpg

John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness from the “Doctor Who” franchise isn’t going to be the only omnisexual space adventurer out there, it looks like he’s about to be joined by Laura Dern’s Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo.

Screen Rant reports that “Leia: Princess of Alderaan,” the upcoming “Star Wars” franchise tie-in novel released this past Force Friday, includes a passage where Dern’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” character Holdo and Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa are joking about inter-species relationships:

“‘A pair of pretty dark eyes.’ Then Amilyn thought about that for a moment. ‘Or more than a pair, if you’re into Grans. Or Aqualish, or Talz. Or even – ‘ ‘That’s all right!’ Leia said through laughter. ‘It’s just humanoid males for me.’ ‘Really? That feels so limiting.’ ‘Thank goodness it’s a big galaxy.'”

Though hinted at in the novel, there’s zero indication that Holdo’s sexuality will be referenced in any way shape or form in Rian Johnson’s film. Last year Disney came under fire in a report from GLAAD about its noted lack of diversity on screen – especially in terms of LGBT characters. Something like this could be seen as an attempted answer to that criticism.

Holdo is one of several new characters introduced for the first time in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” another is Benicio del Toro as the mysterious D.J. and Kelly Marie Tran as a Resistance janitor named Rose Tico.

“Leia: Princess of Alderaan” is now available in book stores, while “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens in theaters December 15th.

INTRODUCING PORGS, THE CUTE NEW CREATURES FROM STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

How Porgs are Bringing the Cuteness Back Into Star Wars

giphy-21.gif

https://www.imdforums.com/threads/porgs-love-em-or-hate-em.3214/

They have not even arrived yet, but rumours are that the cute and lovable PORG aliens are gonna do for THE LAST JEDI what the Ewoks did for RETURN OF THE JEDI.

DGzgnV0UMAARaDA.jpg

Or what Jar Jar did for The Phantom Menace.....

There is already an animated video of them that seems to have people falling in love with these curious creatures!

But is it love at first sight for you?

Or is that anger I sense growing in you? :emoji_confused:

They exist merely to sell toys and make kids happy?

As long as they're an actual part of the plot, and not just shoehorned in to make money, then I'm okay. I never really had much problem with the Ewoks, until I got older and learned that George added them only to make the movie more kid-friendly and to make toy sales. That's mostly why I despise them.

Talking “Last Jedi” Snoke, Kylo & X-Wings

talking-last-jedi-snoke-x-wings-covers-696x464.jpg

The latest issue of Empire includes a cover story takes a good look at Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and offers up a couple of new details regarding the direct sequel to ‘The Force Awakens’.

First up, he confirms that Supreme Leader Snoke will remain an enigmatic 7’1 dark figure and the new film won’t do much to explain him:

“We got the whole story of Palpatine’s rise to power in the prequels, but in the original films he’s exactly what he needs to be, which is just ‘The Emperor’. He’s a dark force: the scary thing behind the thing. That was entirely how I approached Snoke. I wasn’t interested in explaining where he came from or telling his history, except where it serves this story.”

One who will get some screen time is Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren whom Johnson says has a character arc akin to Daisy Ridley’s Rey:

“Writing Kylo Ren is just so much fun. Star Wars boils down to the transition from adolescence into adulthood. That’s the heart of these films and Rey is most obviously the one that hangs on. But it’s also Kylo. In the originals you project entirely onto Luke, while Vader is the scary other – he’s the minotaur.

The fascinating thing about Kylo and Rey is that they’re two sides of something. We can all relate to Kylo: to that anger of being in the turmoil of adolescence and figuring out who he’s going to be as a man; dealing with anger and wanting to separate from his family. He’s not Vader — at least, he’s not Vader yet — and that’s something I really wanted to get into.”

The issue also includes details of Black One, the modified X-Wing used by Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron in the film. Specially modified by Resistance engineers with a temporary accelerator pod affixed to the aft section, that pod allows Poe to outrun First Order cannon emplacements.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens in regular cinemas and IMAX theaters on December 15th.

Johnson On “Star Wars” Freedom & Pre-Planning

johnson-on-star-wars-freedom-pre-planning-696x464.jpg

Though Rian Johnson is rumored to be in contention to helm the ninth official saga film in the “Star Wars” series, the filmmaker is currently busy putting the finishing touches on the eighth – “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” which opens in December.

Speaking with Empire ahead of the film’s release, Johnson says despite the big budget and company structure, he feels he had plenty of freedom and openness whilst working on the title:

“I was terrified coming into this that I was gonna be like Barton Fink and have a script that was due six months ago and I’m still on page three writing about fishmongers. But it’s the most fun I’ve ever had writing something.

The whole experience was incredible: just tapping into my ten-year-old self. Even though it’s Star Wars, the whole thing has felt bizarrely similar to my experience making Looper or Brick or The Brothers Bloom.”

He also discussed future planning of the franchise, saying that these films aren’t as mapped out as many think:

“The perception of these films is that they’re all planned out on a secret sheet of paper in advance, but that’s just not the case. I wasn’t given an outline of where it goes or even a list of things to hit. It really was just, ‘Okay, what’s next?'”

In most cases I'd suggest this was the best approach, however if you're planning a trilogy and don't have any ideas about where its going or how it ends while making the middle episode, it's more likely to cause problems. I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least some thoughts on how the story will finish.

photo-snoke-revealed-in-last-jedi-696x464.jpg

A first official look at current “Star Wars” series villain Supreme Leader Snoke, in his non-holographic form, has gone online at Making Star Wars.

Snoke appears in the flesh in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and this image above reportedly comes from the Topps Trading Card series for the film.

Snoke is once again portrayed by Andy Serkis in the film and is expected to have a much larger role this time around, though won’t get much of his backstory explained.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens on December 15th.

Rian Johnson Explains “Last Jedi” Identity

rian-johnson-explains-last-jedi-identity-696x464.jpg

Its been fairly obvious, but now director Rian Johnson has confirmed that the titular ‘Last Jedi’ of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” isn’t Rey or someone else – it’s Luke Skywalker.

Speaking with The New York Times, Johnson volunteered the statement and suggests there’s no tricks or hidden fake outs – there’s only one Jedi and it’s Luke:

“It’s in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens. Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi. There’s always wiggle room in these movies – everything is from a certain point of view – but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi. And he’s removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown.”

As part of the same interview he revealed he was initially hesitant about committing to the movie and had turned down many franchise film offers in the past. A big draw though was both his childhood affection for it, and a huge degree of freedom:

“I never thought I was actually in the running, because I assumed every director on the planet would want to be doing a ‘Star Wars’ movie. And then it was sprung on me. It was like a bomb dropped. I suddenly realized, Oh, this meeting is about this. I didn’t try to hide the fact that I was freaking out. But I also said, ‘Can I think about it?’

I had figured there would be a big map on the wall with the whole story laid out, and it was not that at all. I was basically given the script for ‘Episode VII;’ I got to watch dailies of what J. J. [Abrams] was doing. And it was like, where do we go from here? That was awesome.”

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens in cinemas on December 15th.
