Review Short Stories

People often have their favourite novels, but favourite short stories sometimes get overlooked.

You read a short story in a book and something about it affects you in such a way that you never forgot it!

Share your favourite short stories and the authors who wrote them here.....

Quite a few by the likes of Richard Matheson and Robert Bloch. Man, those guys knew how to write punchy stories. In fact, one could look at the writers of stuff such as the Twilight Zone and find genuinely good writers who knew how to write a short story that stayed with you.

Talent by Robert Bloch is one I remember, with a killer last line....

I recently read an anthology of short "space opera" stories called "Beyond the Stars: A Planet too Far" (edited by Ellen Campbell) and enjoyed all the stories thoroughly. My absolute favourite was Hope 91 by Nick Webb which told the story, by way of diary entries, of a boy travelling by spaceship to another world.

As I said in my review of the anthology, "the best short stories are the ones that tell a complete story but leave you wanting more" and this one absolutely did.

NB: the Kindle version is only a few dollars on Amazon. I'd absolutely recommend it.

The Last Rung on the Ladder, by Stephen King. Story about a teen boy and his younger sister. I related to it, b/c I have a younger sister; and the dynamic in the story I could completely understand. The ending is a punch in the gut.

"Of Mice and Men."

There's a great little horror story called "The Basement" which was free on Kindle.

The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant.

This is quite famous for its twist ending. Enjoyed it.

:emoji_blush:~ The short stories that come to my mind now is Bernice Bobs Her Hair by F.Scott Fitzgarald and The Walk by Stephen King. Has anyone read any them? If not you should. They are great reads.

I assume you mean The Long Walk? It's more of a short novel than a story; but, yes, I agree it is very good.

~ Yes correct. The Long Walk its been year since I've read it. But I will never forget that brutal long walk.:emoji_walking:

I read Bernice Bobs her Hair, and saw a TV short starring Shelly Duvall. Great stuff!
