One Piece is getting a live-action TV adaptation from Prison Break producer

As Hollywood begins to circle some of Japan’s most popular manga and anime series, sharply looking for the next project it can bring to Western audiences, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is next in line.
Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief, Hiroyuki Nakano, made the announcement yesterday at a 20th anniversary celebration of the popular series. Nakano confirmed that Tomorrow ITV Studios, which is overseen by Marty Adelstein, would be taking on the project, according to the Japan Times. Oda is also reportedly on board with the adaptation.
In a note from Adelstein, the producer claimed that the adaptation could be one of the most expensive live-action TV series ever made. Considering Adelstein hasn’t sold the project to a studio yet (to the best of our knowledge), the suggestion that it could cost more than Sense8 (approximately $9 million an episode) or Game of Thrones (approximately $6-10 million an episode) seems outlandish, to put it mildly.
In a written statement, Oda said the one condition he had with regards to the series is that “it never lets down the fans that have been supporting the series for 20 years,” according to the Japan Times.
There are currently no details on when the series is set to air or how many episodes it will consist of. Adelstein’s Tomorrow ITV Studios is also working on a live-action Cowboy Bebop series.
