Third ‘Star Wars’ anthology movie to be revealed in June

It will follow 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' and the Young Han Solo movie.

The third Star Wars anthology movie is set to be picked next month, as Lucasfilm begin discussions of which character will be taking the spotlight.

A standalone Star Wars adventure movie is set to be released every other year, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story released in 2016 and the young Han Solo epic on course for a 2018 release.

The third Star Wars anthology movie is assumed to be released in 2020 and it’s been reported that the film studio are close to making a decision on which idea they’ll be running with.

“We haven’t identified [the story yet] yet,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told Vanity Fair. “We have a couple of things right now that we’re circling, and we’ll make a decision between the two pretty shortly. It’s probably for 2020, and we will make a decision by June.”

Speaking of the success of Rogue One and The Force Awakens, Kennedy says the studio felt a ‘palpable sense of relief.’

“For the first time, I think we can step outside of this a little bit and take stock, and ask ourselves, “What are the next steps? Where are we going?” It was really the release of Rogue One, because we knew we were moving on with the trilogy, but we didn’t know exactly how these Star Wars stories would be received,” she continued.

“We didn’t want to create confusion, either. So it is a relief to see that people really embraced Rogue One, and they now know that we’re creating these new stories that could fall anywhere on the timeline and don’t necessarily have anything to do with the saga. From a creative point of view, that’s really liberating.”

Daldry In Talks To Direct “Obi-Wan Kenobi” Movie

daldry-to-direct-an-obi-wan-kenobi-movie-696x464.jpg

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry (“The Hours,” “Billy Elliott”) is in early talks to direct a “Star Wars” spin-off film about Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Heat Vision reports that the project is in its earliest stages and there’s no script as yet. If Daldry signs, he would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm.

At this stage it’s unclear if Ewan McGregor will reprise the role which he played in the prequels. McGregor has previously said he would be open to playing the character again.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone is one of several projects being developed by Lucasfilm and Disney with films about Yoda and bounty hunter Boba Fett also under consideration.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Film to Shoot In Early 2019?

obi-wan-kenobi-film-to-shoot-in-early-2019-696x464.jpg

Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly lining up a January 2019 production start date for an Obi-Wan Kenobi ‘A Star Wars Story’ spin-off feature.

Omega Underground reported the date, saying the project is looking likely to be shot at Pinewood Studios UK and could be under the working title ‘Joshua Tree’.

At last report, Stephen Daldry is being lined up to direct and Ewan McGregor has already expressed a desire to return to the role though nothing is official on either front. Should the reported date be accurate, it would suggest the Obi-Wan film would open in May or December 2020.

The report follows the first wave of reactions to “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” following its world premiere and, unsurprisingly, reactions have been gushing just like they were for the previous two films after their premieres. Full reviews are not online yet.

I'm really not sure where they'll go for this story. Obi-Wan's story was basically told in the prequels, with him still being a padawan in the first one, and retiring to Tatooine at the end of the third one.

McGregor On “Star Wars” Return Talk

mcgregor-on-star-wars-return-talk-696x464.jpg

Ewan McGregor showed up at the Golden Globes last night and collected the Best Actor in a Limited Series award for his dual role turn in the third season of FX’s “Fargo”.

Doing press immediately after, it came as little surprise that someone asked him about the possibility of returning to the “Star Wars” franchise for the rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off film. He responded (via Heat Vision):

“There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do. There’s a lot of talk. But it’s just that… There is no plan. I love the new one. I saw it over Christmas, it was really, really beautiful.”

A report last month suggested the film would be shooting at England’s Pinewood Studios starting January 2019 for a late 2020 release, while Stephen Daldry has been linked as a director. McGregor is currently in the midst of filming the Disney fantasy tale “Christopher Robin”.

RUMOR: OBI-WAN SPINOFF MOVIE TO BE A PREQUEL TO A NEW HOPE

In what should be approached as a big rumor, the outlet claims to have gotten ahold of a production bulletin that lists the movie’s title as OBI-WAN: A STAR WARS STORY (going under the codename “Joshua Tree”), and that Daldry is indeed attached as director. As well, the movie will not be an origin story like SOLO, but rather a prequel to A NEW HOPE, following Obi after the events of REVENGE OF THE SITH. The story would center on Obi-Wan keeping an eye on a young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine, only to be brought back into the Jedi game after a dispute between Sand People and local farmers calls his attention. The report also states production is slated for next spring in London.

The last time we saw Obi was in the prequel trilogy, which followed the character (played by Ewan McGregor) from his status as a Padawan learner under Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) to becoming Anakin Skywalker's (Hayden Christensen) teacher, only to fight him when he turned to the dark side in SITH. As for McGregor, he said recently he’s open to returning to the role, but hadn’t had conversations with Lucasfilm…yet.

Again, this should be looked at as a major rumor and not something that should be taken as confirmation. If true, it would be a logical setting given that we saw Kenobi his younger days, and we all know how he met his end. There's just the matter of that bit after the events of SITH we don't know much about, and I can totally see him as a wandering hermit getting into adventures.

Yesterday a rumor sprung up via tabloid site TMZ who claimed to have an official synopsis for the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie – the long rumored to be next entry in the ‘A Star Wars Story’ anthology film series with Stephen Daldry attached as helmer.

According to their report, Obi-Wan comes out of hiding on Tatooine due to tensions between the local farmers and a tribe of Sand People. However, that report has since been quickly shot down due to it being a copy of the synopsis for an old novel in the ‘expanded universe’ line.

I honestly can't see any value in an Obi-Wan spin-off. We've seen his story and it should be assumed that once he settled on Tatooine he was in hiding and wouldn't have advertised his presence too much. Surely there are other stories that could be told?

It's not surprising when you realise how they are stuffing Star Wars down our throats at the moment! I mean why was Solo released now and not at Christmas? Will there be a Star Wars film at Christmas this year? Do we care? Rogue One was okay but that was only because of Darth Vader's few scenes and the Peter Cushing ghostly face bits as played by Guy Henry! The best Star Wars films are the original trilogy and that's that!

Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Reportedly Being Developed For Disney Plus

Obi-Wan-Kenobi-Star-Wars-novel-by-John-Jackson-Miller.jpg

An Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series is reportedly being developed for the Disney Plus streaming service. Seemingly since the Mouse House acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, there's been an endless barrage of rumors regarding a project revolving around the popular Jedi. Despite the frequent speculation, nothing was ever officially confirmed, and all Ewan McGregor could do was repeatedly say he'd be happy to return to play the character if asked. Many fans expressed a keen interest in seeing an Obi-Wan spinoff movie, particularly since McGregor's performances in the prequel trilogy were well-liked.

Back in 2017, it looked like an Obi-Wan film was finally taking the necessary steps forward, with director Stephen Daldry reportedly signing on and a working title suggesting a return trip to Tatooine. Plans for this movie allegedly fell apart in the wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story underperforming at the box office, a turn of events that led to Lucasfilm placing all future anthology movies on hold. However, the studio remains keen on bringing Obi-Wan back in some capacity, and they seem to have their sights set on the small screen.

According to Star Wars News Net, Lucasfilm is working on an Obi-Wan limited series for Disney Plus, which could run for as many as six episodes. Apparently, plans were in place for an Obi-Wan film to shoot last year after Solo came out, but the project has since been retooled to reflect the studio's changing strategies in producing new Star Wars content. Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted at a "slowdown" on the movie release schedule following Episode IX this December.

Lucasfilm is going to keep making Star Wars movies in the future, with separate trilogies from David Benioff & D.B. Weiss and (contrary to rumors stating otherwise) Rian Johnson in the pipeline. But they've also made live-action television a key component of their plans moving forward. Already, there are two Star Wars series confirmed for Disney Plus in The Mandalorian and a Rogue One prequel starring Diego Luna's Cassian Andor. It wouldn't be surprising if Lucasfilm was exploring other possibilities for the streaming service, especially if the theatrical films are going to go on hiatus for a while. Disney Plus gives them an outlet for fresh content to keep fans engaged in the interim and tell compelling Star Wars stories that may not be ideal for a blockbuster tentpole. Plausibly, Obi-Wan is going to be a smaller-scale, character-driven drama exploring Kenobi's exile on Tatooine, so Disney Plus sounds like the best home for it.

It's also smart that Obi-Wan is being positioned as a limited series. Much of the character's life has already been covered extensively in various corners of Star Wars canon, indicating there'd only be so much the show could do. During his time on Tatooine, Obi-Wan did help settle the occasional dispute, but largely laid low as a hermit and kept a close eye on Luke Skywalker. There weren't many (if any) opportunities for galaxy-spanning adventures, meaning the Obi-Wan premise could be stretched thin if it went beyond one season. Plus, it could test the waters to see if there'd be interest in a limited series about other legacy characters such as Lando Calrissian, Han Solo, or others.

They stepped in a pile of poo with Solo apparently! I mean Disney have brought back Darth Maul but where are they going with him? As far as we knew he was dead but they've brought him back for no other purpose than to shock us! They probably had a series of Solo films planned and Maul was going to be the main adversary but now..? I mean where was Maul during the events of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi? A cheap stunt that has backfired on us the fans it seems!

Hopefully they will re-enact that scene for the TV show, if they make it!
That would be awesome to see in live action. The thing I like is that the fight is so short. They could have done a long, drawn out battle, but in the end, the short duel is a perfect end for Maul.

Maul had actually been brought back during the EU years (now Legends), originally surviving his ordeal and falling many stories into a pile of debris, his hate keeping him alive. He then used the Force to forge a lower body that was fairly spider-like. When Disney decided to use him again, they made his lower body more human-like. He had an arc during Rebels, where he and his brother reunited and worked for Black Sun. I like the idea of bringing Maul back, because he was so cool in TPM, and he needed to be fleshed out, but in that same vein, it's another case of "side character is cool because of their ambiguity, so let's milk the character and wring every ounce of mystery out of them". That certainly backfired when they wrote more Boba Fett stories in the past.

Ewan McGregor In Talks For “Obi-Wan” Series

http://www.darkhorizons.com/ewan-mcgregor-in-talks-for-obi-wan-series/

Rumored earlier yesterday and then hitting the trades last night, actor Ewan McGregor is now in talks to reprise his role of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi in a series for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service.

Cinelinx broke the original scoop saying he’d signed, but the trades say it’s nowhere near that far along, though negotiations are underway. Otherwise, the original report is correct. Making Star Wars has added to it, saying the project is being conceived as a six-part series.

The announcement is not a major surprise. Before Disney opted to retool its “Star Wars” plans in the wake of the box-office disappointment of “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” director Stephen Daldry was linked to helm a potential Obi-Wan solo film. McGregor himself has indicated on numerous occasions his willingness to return to the role.

When “Solo” flopped, the franchise scrapped most of its plans for ‘A Star Wars Story’ standalone films including a Boba Fett one. It’s thought ideas from that ended up morphing into “The Mandalorian” series which premieres this Fall, and so it’s logical an Obi-Wan series would inevitably follow.

Daldry or any other writer’s involvement is unknown but Daldry left the project back while it was still a film. If the Obi-Wan series goes forward, it’ll be the third live-action “Star Wars” series on the way following “The Mandalorian” and the Cassian Andor prequel series.

The report comes as several “Star Wars” fansites are reporting that Lucasfilm may be set to utilise East London’s soon to open East Brook Studios for future productions.
