Platinum Dunes Ditching Horror Remakes
Having made their name on remakes of classic horror from “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” to “Friday the 13th” to “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” production company Platinum Dunes is now stepping back from the remake trough.
Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller formed the company in the early 2000s and released numerous rehashes including “The Amityville Horror” and “The Hitcher” amongst others, but have also had some original horror hits including “The Purge” and “Ouija” films and this past weekend’s smash hit “A Quiet Place”.
Speaking with
CinePop (via
Bloody Disgusting) this week, Fuller revealed the company is going to focus on original genre entertainment as their main focus going forward:
“We’ve rebooted enough. We’ve done all of our [rebooted] horror movies. We’re not going to be doing that anymore. For us, as a company, we’re always looking for original material. And the idea of finding something original was important for us. We made a film where there’s two to three minutes of talking in the movie, where sound is a full character, and it feels like audiences are really responding to those ingredients.”
What that means for their long in the works remake of “The Birds” is unclear. The company’s upcoming projects include a live-action adaptation of “Dora the Explorer,” a fourth film in “The Purge” franchise, and a TV series adaptation of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan books.
