Thomas Nigel Kneale (18 April 1922 – 29 October 2006) was a British screenwriter. He wrote professionally for more than 50 years, was a winner of the Somerset Maugham Award, and was twice nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best British Screenplay. In 2000, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Horror Writers Association.

Predominantly a writer of thrillers that used science-fiction and horror elements, he was best known for the creation of the character Professor Bernard Quatermass. Quatermass was a heroic scientist who appeared in various television, film and radio productions written by Kneale for the BBC, Hammer Film Productions and Thames Television between 1953 and 1996. Kneale wrote original scripts and successfully adapted works by writers such as George Orwell, John Osborne, H. G. Wells and Susan Hill.

He was most active in television, joining BBC Television in 1951; his final script was transmitted on ITV in 1997. Kneale wrote well-received television dramas such as The Year of the Sex Olympics (1968) and The Stone Tape (1972) in addition to the Quatermassserials. He has been described as "one of the most influential writers of the 20th century,"[1] and as "having invented popular TV."

I've loved the movie version of "Quatermass and the Pit" for a long, long, time. Last Xmas a friend gave me the BBC TV version on DVD.

The TV version was good, but I prefer the movie version, AKA "Five Million Years to Earth". The movie is in color, has better production values and generally better casting*, and tells the same story in a more direct fashion.

I wish a reasonably priced Region 1 DVD version could be had. I do have a VHS tape I recorded when it played on Turner Classic Movies, but I would still like a DVD.

*I like the actors who play Quatermass in both versions, but I prefer James Donald as Dr. Mathew Roney and Julian Glover as Colonel Breen.

My favourite is the final one with John Mills.

I was largely disappointed with it as a kid, except for the ending.

Now I love it all. Especially that ending - and I think John Mills made an excellent Quatermass, despite having misgivings about the whole programme before and during the making of it. His wife made him take the role apparently.

I saw the movie version of that, "The Quatermass Conclusion". It wasn't bad, but I didn't think it was great either.

Does anybody remember this attempted comedy that set out to ridicule UFO spotters and sci fi fans, but simply ended up getting cancelled after only one season.

London Weekend Television was hoping for one of it's biggest hits too!

It was borne out of curmudgeonly Quatermass writer Nigel Kneale's one and only visit to a sci fi convention where he saw the attendees in cos-play (of the time) as just terrible people and lumped them together in his mind with UFO spotters and thought that a hit comedy that mocked them might be a hit.

It wasn't....

Just found out the other day that Prunella Gee was married to Ken Campbell!!! How on earth did he do that? I've heard of him dating some nice looking women before but that is absolutely ridiculous!!

This must be before his acts of defiance with the freedom party got him noticed as a subversive by the Federation! Strange that Blakes 7 must be the only sci-fi show where the main characters never went back or forward into time as well!

Legendary Plans Reboot Of “Quatermass”

legendary-plans-reboot-of-quatermass-696x464.jpg

“The Night Manager” and “Hanna” scribe David Farr is set to pen the script for a film reboot of the “Quatermass” franchise for Legendary Entertainment and Hammer Films.

The 1950s British science-fiction series and subsequent film trilogy followed Bernard Quatermass, a highly moral scientist who continually finds himself confronting sinister alien forces that threaten to destroy humanity.

The character was often considered a precursor to the more well-known The Doctor in “Doctor Who” and was played by numerous actors over the years. Simon Oakes (“Let Me In,” “The Woman in Black”) will produce the new film.

I wonder if the recent trend of gender changing will apply to this franchise too? It only takes a simple slip-of-the-pen name tweak for us to have our first Bernadette Quatermass. :emoji_expressionless:

If so, I bet they cast Olivia Coleman, since DOCTOR WHO failed to nab her.

Oh, we all saw the sex change coming...

But the fact she's a black, crippled lesbian with a learning disability was a bit of a surprise.
