DISCOVERY 341: Top of the Pops – 6.2.1975

Recovered on a badly-decomposing reel to reel videotape, this recording required careful transfer and restoration to create a complete programme. Multiple issues with sound sync and picture distortion have have now been corrected. As the photos illustrate, the final outcome is very good quality.

DISCOVERIES 368 & 369 - Closed Circuit

The first demonstration of ATV's newly delivered Ampex videotape machine.

The T/R date is March 1959, so late 1958 could be a possibility.

It's about 6 or 7 minutes long and is a very short edition of Closed Circuit from Foley Street. It's a recording of one of ATV's directors (Bernard?) explaining that we are watching the very first recording to be made on ATV's new Ampex video machine! There's even a minute or so of the ITN news included with Robin Day talking about Kruschev just to prove that it was recorded to videotape just after 10pm.

The TR date is from the docket inside the can from Rank Labs at Denham, so it's possible that somewhere in the network, a film recorder captured the moment that Closed Circuit was networked from Foley Street and then the film was processed in March 1959. The docket is definitely Rank paperwork.

This was known about in the 1990s and indeed Kaleidoscope showed it, but the film (and VHS copy) disappeared circa 1998. Rediscovering it again at ITV is a real revelation and they are delighted!

We are still in the dark, JB. Latest pinch of salt rumours are that something about WHEEL IN SPACE is in the offing and that the 10 minute animation is only part of a bigger reveal. Also that Morris has been demanding a "Found by T.I.E.A and Phillip Morris" credit on the end of any found stories and that is what is holding up negotiations.

But it just seems to be fans making up stuff and whistling in the dark. Nobody has discussed or proven anything concrete whatsoever. So business as usual, sadly. :emoji_disappointed:

Thanks, Doc! I guessed it would be Morris holding us up once again although his work in dangerous countries should be noticed, I don't think it should be put onto the actual episode rather a quick DVD extra!

Kaleidoscope recovers a huge haul of 1960s /1970s off-air videotape recordings. 405 line conversions Archive television organisation Kaleidoscope has recovered a huge haul of 1960s and 1970s off-air videotape recordings that were thought to be a collection of audio recordings. Programmes featured on the tapes include missing footage from Top of the Pops, Lift Off with Ayshea, Saturday Variety, 45, It's Cliff and more. The domestic electronic 405-625 line conversion process is demonstrated by Project Manager David Dean. This project has been commissioned and financed by Kaleidoscope to enable a large batch of lost episodes of TV shows to be played again in the best possible quality.

Well I'm hoping for Evil of The Daleks and Wheel in Space but you never know! Richard Latto? What kind of name is that and I've never heard of him before!!! Is he one of Morris's goons?

He just seems to be a BBC radio producer and had something to do with the recent discovery of the previously missing original film prints of the entire WORZEL GUMMIDGE show, which are being remastered for blu-ray.

If it isn't DOCTOR WHO | would rather he just said. Nixing DOCTOR WHO possibilities should be standard procedure imo.

Instead he lets the possibility hang in the air.

That's the sort of thing that is so tiresome about the MISSING EPISODE saga. Fans who could put rumours and rampant speculation swiftly to bed choosing instead to play silly "I've got a secret!" mind games.

Unless it really is DOCTOR WHO episodes, of course.....

Current speculation on Mondas.....

Film inserts for The Five Doctors or something else season twenty?
No idea if they’re still around or not
I believe the S20 film was all lost except Five Doctors, which exists and was restored for DVD. It would be nice if something like Mawdryn or Arc were found (not sure which others have location filming), but I don't know that the dates line up.
