James Bond actor Clifton James dies at 96

Actor Clifton James, who appeared as Sheriff JW Pepper in two James Bond films, has died at the age of 96.

He died close to his childhood home in Gladstone, Oregon, on Saturday due to complications from diabetes.

James was best known for appearing alongside Sir Roger Moore in the Bond films Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun during the 1970s.

His daughter Lynn said: "He was the most outgoing person, beloved by everybody."

She added: "I don't think the man had an enemy. We were incredibly blessed to have had him in our lives."

In 1973 James played Louisiana sheriff JW Pepper in Live and Let Die, in which he made a memorable appearance in a chaotic boat chase sequence.

His character proved so popular he was asked to reprise the role in 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun, involving another car chase, in Thailand, and a scene where he gets pushed into water by a baby elephant.

Paying tribute on Twitter, Sir Roger wrote: "Terribly sad to hear Clifton James has left us. As JW Pepper he gave my first two Bond films a great, fun character."

Yes, I read about that the other day.

It's sad to see him go, but at least he had one hell of a good life.

I particularly liked his work in COOL HAND LUKE and THE UNTOUCHABLES.

RIP.

Honestly, I thought he died years ago.

It always gives me hope when someone of a fat disposition gets into their 90s.

I get all the Clifton actors confused with Clifton Davis from the Sherman Hemsley sitcom Amen. :emoji_blush: Clifton James, Clifton Webb.

Not familiar with Mr. James's work, but 96 is a respectable age. Judging by that pic, he seems like a nice guy a la John Candy, Ned Beatty, or Jackie Gleason.

RIP

Roger Moore's first outing as Bond is one of the best in the series! I think his fight with Tee Hee is terrific! Shame they discarded the henchman villain in the movies like Oddjob, Tee Hee and Red Grant!

Live and Let Die | In-depth Movie Review

Roger Moore's debut Bond adventure is in the reviewing crosshairs here. The film has quite a few plot holes and one-of-a-kind elements but has held up well in the minds of fans and the general public. Is that reputation deserved?
