How to Train Your Dragon 3 has moved from May 18, 2018 to March 1, 2019. It is currently the only opening scheduled for that weekend, although there are a handful of other high-profile projects coming out around that time including Captain Marvel (March 8) and Godzilla 2 (March 22). The How to Train Your Dragon films have been pretty spaced out overall, with a four-year gap between the first two films and now a five-year gap between the second and third movies.

This is the third delay for the movie, which was originally targeting a summer 2016 debut. In 2014, it was postponed a year to 2017. Then it was postponed again to 2018, following a massive round of layoffs at DreamWorks Animation. As of 2015, work on the script was well underway with writer-director Dean DeBlois.

Third “Train Your Dragon” Gets A Title

Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have announced that the third film in the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise will be titled “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”.

Currently slated for a March 1st 2019 release, the story sees Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) fulfilling his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia and Toothless’ discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away.

When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind. Dean DeBlois returns as the series director.

Third “Train Your Dragon” Ends The Franchise

Few film franchises get proper endings – studios will ride them until they wear out and then quietly kill them off in ignominy, leaving the last time we see a film series being a lackluster sequel.

In a new interview with EW, director Dean DeBlois has confirmed that Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” is taking a different approach with the film set to serve as an ending for the entire franchise – not just the films but the TV series as well.

Speaking about the film’s storyline and plans, DeBlois says:

“We thought about it for a long time and came up with what we think is a bittersweet way to say goodbye to these characters, but the right way. You will understand why Hiccup says, as you heard in the trailer, ‘There were dragons when I was a boy.’ And by the end of this film, you’ll have answered the question [of] what could have happened to them.

The overall theme of the story is letting go, or finding the wisdom to let go, rather, [It applies to the non-human characters, too]… So much of Hiccup’s identity, as a leader and an adult, is because of his relationship with Toothless…But if Toothless is not there, who is Hiccup?”

“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” sees Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) fulfilling his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind. The film opens March 1st 2019.

The third and final feature in the Dreamworks Animation franchise with Hiccup and Toothless having to travel to a hidden world thought to only exist in myth and fighting together to the very end to protect everything they love in an order to take down a dangerous enemy. Early reviews paint this as a very strong capper to the franchise.
