Disney Holding Talks To Buy 21st Century Fox?

Fox-Disney-700x300.jpg

In a move that could be one of the biggest shake-ups in Hollywood in many years, CNBC reports Disney was reportedly in talks to potentially buy 21st Century Fox.

The advantages are huge – the deal would bring the original “Star Wars” trilogy and the prequel films under their roof, same with the “X-Men” and Fox’s other Marvel properties, plus it would nab FOX’s other lucrative franchises like “Avatar” and “Alien”. On top of that they would have a prestige arm in Fox Searchlight, and potentially all of Fox’s back catalogue of films for their standalone streaming service launching in 2019 (assuming Fox’s existing deals don’t prevent it).

Talks have apparently been going on for weeks, and if they go through then Fox would essentially get out of the movie business to put their focus on its TV, news and sports divisions. Though talks are no longer active at the moment according to The Wall Street Journal, the report notes they could certainly resume as Fox is reportedly still very interested in selling its entertainment divisions in order to focus on its most profitable areas.

The ramifications of such a deal are immense, but The Federal Trade Commission may not be keen on it due to potential monopoly issues – such a deal for example means Disney can’t take Fox Television or Fox Sports because they already own ABC and ESPN and can’t own two broadcast networks.

Fox Disney Merger Talks Already Dead

Following the CNBC report this morning that sent everyone into a tizzy over the possibility, The Wall Street Journal has thrown a bucket of ice water on the speculation over Disney potentially buying Fox’s film division.

The outlet has further information on the deal, stating it fell apart after the two sides couldn’t agree on deal points and how much money should change hands. While the initial report did indicate talks had ceased, there was the impression they could resume. WSJ’s report however suggests chances of that now are next to none.

Both companies saw their stocks get a boost with the news that such a deal was under consideration – Fox jumping by 5% and Disney by 1%. By all indications Fox is still intent on offloading their film assets in the near future, and with this deal falling through it’s likely other major players will step up to potentially take on the job.

Comcast Now Pursuing Fox’s Assets

comcast-now-pursuing-foxs-assets-696x464.jpg

NBC owner Comcast is reported looking to acquire some of 21st Century Fox’s assets reports CNBC, taking the place of Disney Pictures which was reportedly in talks for the same assets earlier this month.

Like that previous negotiation, the Comcast deal would be for 21st Century Fox and the Fox Television Production companies, and would NOT include Fox News, Fox Sports or the FOX channel. Talks are ongoing.

Like Disney, Comcast is under rules and can only own one broadcast network so FOX and FOX News are off the table to steer clear of antitrust laws. The site also reports that though Disney and Fox are not currently in talks, the deal is not dead on their end. Also Verizon Communications is said to be interested in acquiring parts of Fox.

warners-plans-its-2019-film-slate-696x464.jpg

In the wake of the studio crossing the $5 billion mark at the worldwide box office this year, and with next year’s slate pretty much locked, THR reports that Warner Bros. Pictures has begun to work out its 2019 schedule with plans for 17-20 film releases.

The films Warner Bros. already has in place for 2019 include: “The LEGO Movie 2” on February 8th, “Isn’t It Romantic” on February 14th, the “Godzilla” sequel on March 22nd, “Shazam” on April 5th, “Minecraft” on May 24th, “Shaft” on June 14th, “IT: Chapter 2” on September 6th, “The Goldfinch” on October 11th, “Wonder Woman 2” on November 1st, and “Margie Claus” on November 15th.

Also on the cards is Warners’ recent acquisition of the rights to The Weinstein Company’s “The Six Billion Dollar Man” film reboot of the iconic 1970s TV series. Damian Szifron is attached to pen and direct with Mark Wahlberg slated to star.

There’s also a new Clint Eastwood film, a sequel to “Lights Out,” the Michael B. Jordan led legal drama “Just Mercy,” Edward Norton’s feature adaptation of the Jonathan Lethem novel “Motherless Brooklyn,” and potentially the next James Bond film in the international markets should it win that contract.

Comcast Says No Longer Reviewing Deal for 21st Century Fox Assets
Comcast says in statement it never got level of engagement from Fox to make definitive offer

Comcast Corp. said it is no longer pursuing an acquisition of several key media and entertainment assets from 21st Century Fox, leaving Rupert Murdoch’s media empire in position to finalize a deal with Walt Disney Co.

A new report over at CNBC suggests that communications giant Comcast could top Disney’s $52.4 billion offer for 20th Century Fox.

The report says that negotiations are technically still open and no decision has been made by Comcast on a topping bid yet, but Disney is reportedly already preparing itself for a Comcast topping bid and considering responses in case.

Comcast executives suggested to Murdoch last year they would be willing to pay significantly more for Fox’s assets than what Disney was offering and such an offer could persuade enough FOX shareholders to vote against Murdoch who chose Disney over Comcast due to regulatory concerns.

I am not business minded, but if it leads to the cancellation of the latest proposed FANTASTIC FOUR movie, then YAYYYY!!!
More importantly, if the acquisition by Disney results in a good FF movie then even more YAYYY!!!!

But are we ready for Disney's ALIEN 5?
Given the direction that franchise has gone in recent years, I'm happy to answer that with a big YES! It's not like they could make anything worse than AvP.

Disney is getting too big though. That worries me, for some reason.
True but so far they seem to be managing. It seems that they're allowing divisions to work as discrete units rather than trying to oversee everything from a top level. MCU, Lucasfilm, Pixar, all seem to be basically operating as independent entities with a united vision. If they keep that approach, things can continue to work successfully.

First 3D Cinema LED Screen Is Now Running

first-3d-cinema-led-screen-is-now-running-696x464.jpg

The world’s first 3D Cinema LED screen is now operating at Arena Cinemas’ Sihlcity theater in Switzerland according to a press release from Samsung Electronics.

Designed and installed with the help of Imaculix AG, the electronics company claims the 3D-ready variation of Samsung’s Cinema LED screen “maintains consistent brightness and picture quality across an entire theater, ensuring a uniform, immersive viewing experience for viewers in every seat.”

The screen is the industry’s first Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)-certified High Dynamic Range theater display. The 4K HDR screen stretches nearly 10.3m (33.8ft) wide and 5.4m (17.7ft) in height, features nearly 9 million pixels, and has peak brightness levels nearly ten times greater (146fL) than the common cinema standard (14fL).

2D LED Cinema Displays were installed last year in Seoul, Busan and Shanghai.

Comcast Could Pay $60B To Nab Fox

comcast-could-pay-60b-to-nab-fox-696x464.jpg

Comcast is reportedly preparing to offer an all-cash bid for 21st Century Fox, which would likely disrupt the in the works Disney-Fox deal.

Reuters reports that U.S. cable operator Comcast Corp. is asking investment banks to increase a bridge financing facility by as much as $60 billion so it can make an all-cash offer for the media assets that 21st Century Fox Inc has agreed to sell to Walt Disney Co. for $52 billion.

Comcast had been pursuing Fox before the Disney deal was put in place and has continued to pursue it. A lot though will depend upon if the U.S. government approves AT&T’s acquisition of Time-Warner – if it happens, Comcast will then make an all-cash bid. If not, Comcast will have to back off. That decision is expected next month.

Fox CEO Wants More Than Superheroes

brolin-talks-deadpool-2-reshootsv-696x464.jpg

These days the only guaranteed box-office juggernauts are movies from the superhero genre, and this year has seen a large amount of them hit the multiplexes including “Black Panther,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Deadpool 2” with all three situated as the top films at the worldwide box-office this year.

They’ll be joined this week by “The Incredibles 2” and then a few weeks later by Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp”. Understandably there’s concern in circles regarding what happens when the inevitable bubble bursts. That includes Fox Chairman and CEO Stacey Snider who addressed a crowd the other day at CineEurope saying:

“The studios need to have a bigger appetite for big cinematic, tentpole-type entertainment that isn’t necessarily based on branded material. When you think about ‘The Greatest Showman’…what we had to hang onto was that the music was incredible and that, if ever there was a person to be ‘The Greatest Showman’ at Christmastime, it was Hugh Jackman. The same with ‘The Martian’ – it was based on a book that was self-published. It was hardly a bestseller… If we don’t continue to reach out to the folks that come more than just to see ‘The Avengers,’ we are going to have just the weekend business.”

Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. and FOX themselves are already themselves) moving full steam ahead with superhero films, it doesn’t look like the bubble is bursting anytime soon.
