Diesel Responds To Rodriguez’s “Furious” Post
Earlier this week, actress Michelle Rodriguez offered up an opinion piece on social media about the state of the “Fast and the Furious” franchise. More specifically it was about its handling of women and how their characters often lacked the screen time for proper development or conversations with each other.
What really raised eyebrows though was her threatening to quit the franchise if changes weren’t made. So, over the weekend, she and her co-star Vin Diesel took to social media again to address the recent controversy with a video.
In the text of the post, Diesel essentially agrees with Rodriguez about the state of the franchise and says a goal with the in-development ninth film is to achieve a higher standard. F. Gary Gray, who helmed this year’s eighth entry “The Fate of the Furious,” has also spoken about this with Business Insider and feels his film did a good job and boasted a “strong representation of women”.
Two more “Fast and Furious” films are in the works with the ninth entry tipped to open in cinemas on April 19th 2019.

First “Furious” Helmer Open To Return
Though he’s had a few hits and misses, filmmaker Rob Cohen will always be remembered for giving birth to the “Fast and the Furious” and “xXx” franchise. Cohen helmed the first films in both series back in 2001 and 2002, the director’s sixth and seventh theatrical feature following the likes of “Daylight” and “DragonHeart”.
He hasn’t returned to either series since, but in a new interview with Screen Crush he says he hasn’t shut out the possibility of ever coming back. In fact, he tells the site that when the day comes for a final film in the saga he would like to direct:
“I always wished Universal would come back to me to direct the last one… The franchise went from a Los Angeles story built around a family of multicultural brothers and sisters to what I’ll call ‘pure spectacle.’ The beauty is that the audience has ridden along with it for these 18 years.
I’m very proud that the characters I created in 2001 are still in the lexicon. There‘s still a Dominic Toretto appearing every two years, or a Mia Toretto, or a Letty. It had to evolve, and it evolved in a way that was ultra-worldwide commercial. And the heartbeat of it is: We live in a world with no gravity, cars can do anything. They can burst out of the nose of airplanes. People can jump across freeways. They can take down helicopters. It’s like, ‘Okay, anything for the spectacle’.
I started out to do a different thing, but the thing that I did implanted this world and these characters deeply in that audience. [M]ost of the time when you go on the internet and [read] ‘Which was the best Fast & Furious?’ It’s almost always mine.”
Cohen’s new film “The Hurricane Heist” hits cinemas March 9th.

Dwayne Johnson May Not Return In “Furious 9”
As part of an extensive interview with Rolling Stone ahead of the release of “Rampage,” actor Dwayne Johnson has spoken about a number of topics from his battles with depression to his feud with actor Vin Diesel on the set of the eighth “Fast and Furious” film.
During the pre-release publicity tour, the close-knit ‘Fast’ family descended into seemingly petty squabbling in a series of social media posts. The feud began with comments by Johnson calling out some of his male co-stars (he didn’t name who), but it didn’t take long for people to work out the main target of his potshots was Diesel himself.
Both actor’s characters only share one scene together in “The Fate of the Furious” and Johnson confirms that it was done with the assistance of editing as the actors did not shoot together:
“We were not in any scenes together. Vin and I had a few discussions, including an important face-to-face in my trailer. And what I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach movie-making and collaborating. It took me some time, but I’m grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not.”
He also tells magazine that he may not appear in the upcoming ninth installment of the franchise, though remains excited about the upcoming spin-off with Jason Statham due out next year:
“Right now I’m concentrating on making the [Fast and Furious Hobbs and Shaw] spinoff as good as it can be. I wish [Diesel] all the best and I harbor no ill will there, just because of the clarity we have. Actually, you can erase that last part about ‘no ill will.’ We’ll just keep it with the clarity.”
Johnson also added that the feud actually helped Fate’s tracking as pre-release interest shot through the roof after that. The Hobbs and Shaw film opens July 26th 2019, while “Fast and Furious 9” is slated for an April 10th 2020 release.
