In a stunning development, Variety is reporting that Joss Whedon has been enlisted to helm a Batgirl solo feature for Warner Bros., which will be the latest entry to their ever-growing DC Films Universe.

In addition to directing, Whedon will also write and produce the untitled Batgirl standalone project, which will be his first film venture since Avengers: Age of Ultron. The report also adds that the idea for the film was conceived within the last month, so at this point in time, it's still uncertain whether the superheroine will ultimately make appearances in The Batman or Gotham City Sirens.

Whedon had previously expressed interest in directing a female-led superhero movie, specifically naming both Black Widow and a female-only Avengers movie as potential ideas that interested him in the past, but alas, neither project ever generated much traction with the higher-ups. However, with Batgirl, which will be DC's second solo film with a female lead, it looks as though he's finally gotten his wish.

It's still early for casting rumors, but Alicia Silverstone (Batman & Robin) and the late Yvonne Craig (ABC's Batman) have both played the iconic character in the past. It's also unknown whether we'll see either J.K. Simmons or Ben Affleck drop by in her adventure, but it's certainly a possibility.

No other producers have been announced just yet, but Toby Emmerich, Jon Berg, and Geoff Johns will oversee the feature for the studio. Batgirl is now the latest DC Film to enter active development, following Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, The Batman, Nightwing, Shazam, Black Adam, The Flash, Cyborg, and Man of Steel 2.

Whedon is, of course, best known for his groundbreaking work on 2012's The Avengers, which is still the highest-grossing superhero movie of all-time, and its 2015 sequel. He's also made contributions to several other superhero films over the years, including X-Men, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He's also developed several hit television series, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Green Lantern Corps is the name of a fictional intergalactic military/police force appearing in comics published by DC Comics.

They patrol the farthest reaches of the DC Universe at the behest of the Guardians, a race of immortals residing on the planet Oa.

According to DC continuity, the Green Lantern Corps has been in existence for three billion years, surviving multiple conflicts both internal and foreign.

Currently operating divided as pairs amongst the 3600 “sectors” of the universe, there are 7202 members (known commonly as Green Lanterns), two lanterns for every sector except sector 2814 which has 4 members.

Each Green Lantern is given a power ring, a weapon granting the use of incredible abilities that are directed by the wearer's own willpower.

Warner Bros have announced a Green Lantern Corps movie for 2020.

Warner Bros. and DC Comics are actively developing "Green Lantern Corps" and are on the lookout for the right actor to fill in the shoes of Hal Jordan.

There's still a long way to go before "Green Lantern Corps" hits theaters in 2020. For now, there has been no actor confirmed for the film. According to The Wrap, there is already a shortlist for the role, with a couple of familiar names on the list.


The list includes Tom Cruise, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Armie Hammer, Joel McHale and Jake Gyllenhaal. The biggest surprise in this list is Reynolds, who previous portrayed Green Lantern in the titular 2011 film; however, his return is highly unlike as he previously said he isn't going to appear in future DC films. He's also currently portraying a more popular and successful character, Deadpool.

Cooper is also another strong contender for the role. He also auditioned for the role of Hal Jordan in the 2011 "Green Lantern" movie, but lost the role to Reynolds. However, Cooper's involvement in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" makes it less likely for Cooper to switch sides.

Hammer, on the other hand, is constantly being linked to the role presently. For months, there have been rumors that he would be joining the DC Extended Universe as Hal Jordan. However, he has denied the rumors and that he has never been in discussions for the role.


On the other hand, "This Is Us" star Sterling K. Knight is also interested in playing a role in "Green Lanter Corps". The actor expressed his desire to portray John Stewart. Knight, however, has been cast in Marvel's "Black Panther," due in theaters 2018.

Meanwhile, David Goyer has been tasked to write the script for "Green Lantern Corps" together with Justin Rhodes, Deadline reported. "Green Lantern Corps" has been described as "Lethal Weapon" that is set in space.

The upcoming "Green Lantern Corps" movie is set said to focus on two characters: Hal Jordan and John Stewart. John worked as an African-American Marine sniper before joining the Lantern Corps. The movie will revolve on John as a rookie Green Lantern and his relationship with the more experienced Hal and the rest of the Corps.

I started collecting comics just as Hal turned into Parallax and Kyle Rayner took over, so Kyle was my GL. Never really managed to work up much enthusiasm for either Hal Jordan or John Stewart (or any of the other GL Corps members for that matter).

Hal was still the main GL when I started reading, so he was the one I always associated with the book. I remember some John Stewart stories when I was a kid, but it was mostly Hal. Kyle came a little later, and I liked him. I absolutely hated - and still hate - Guy Gardner.

I wasn't a fan immediately but for some reason picked up his solo titles and really started to enjoy reading him. His character was well developed and he became less of a buffoon. Unfortunately the timing wasn't great for the solo series which was interrupted by a couple of crossovers, and then he lost his ring with the destruction of the GL Corps (despite it not being a GL ring) and then he suddenly turned into an alien who could turn his arms into guns with weird face paintings.

See I came in at the next generation stage. Wally West was the Flash and Barry was dead. Kyle Rayner took over as Green Lantern. And then Ollie got blown up and Connor Hawke came along as Green Arrow (Still a fan of Oliver Queen though - when they decided to resurrect him with a Kevin Smith written series I was extremely satisfied). Admittedly the Oliver Queen of the Arrow TV series doesn't really have a lot to do with his comic book counterpart. In many ways it feels like the producers wanted to do a Batman series but couldn't get permission so they just cut and pasted Oliver Queen / Arrow over Bruce Wayne / Batman in their scripts and had him use arrows instead of Batarangs.

Wyatt Wanted For “Green Lantern Corps.”?





It has been a busy holiday weekend for DC movie rumors from an apparent “Aquaman” teaser trailer description to a rumored list of “Batgirl” actress contenders. Both rumors originated on Reddit and so far neither has had any serious secondary confirmation – making them highly speculative at best.

Today a rumor with a little bit more weight to it has arrived over at That Hashtag Showwhich reports that they have confirmed that “The Gambler” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” director Rupert Wyatt is currently attached to helm “Green Lantern Corps.” for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Trying to avoid the pitfalls of the previous 2011 Ryan Reynolds-led film which adopted a standard superhero origin tale, the new film has been dubbed “Lethal Weapon in Space” and will see forty-something former military test pilot and Green Lantern veteran Hal Jordan mentoring a twenty-something former military sniper and fresh recruit John Stewart.

In the past Wyatt has said prefers to direct his own screenplays. David Goyer and Justin Rhodes have penned the new GL script which is expected to incorporate some of Stewart’s comic book origins.

Wyatt is in post-production now on his sci-fi thriller “Captive State” opening late next year. “Green Lantern Corps.” is not due out in cinemas until July 2020.

“Nightwing” Film Needs A Committed Actor






If you want to play Nightwing in the upcoming DCEU live-action film at Warner Bros. Pictures, be prepared to go to extraordinary lengths according to the film’s director Chris McKay.

Bill Dubuque (“The Accountant”) is writing the script about Dick Grayson, the youngest member of a family of acrobats who became Batman’s sidekick Robin and then left him to set out on his own as the hero Nightwing.

McKay, coming off the success of “The LEGO Batman Movie,” revealed on Twitter this week how his “Nightwing” movie is progressing and admits his deep affection for the character means he’s not going to accept someone for the role unless they’re fully committed:

“The story of Dick Grayson, becoming Robin, then becoming Nightwing played out for us, the audience, in the comics in REAL TIME. It wasn’t a flashback. We experienced it.

So all of Robin/Nightwing’s successes and failures we were along for the ride. And people that underestimated Robin or dismissed him perhaps had their opinions changed as we watched him “grow up” right in front of us.

His relationships, his conflicts with Batman et al felt real to me because he was the window character with which we experienced Gotham City.”

Grayson is an incredibly athletic hero, meaning the film’s star will need to be extraordinarily nimble for the stunt and martial arts-heavy feature, along with being ready for some psychological stresses:.

“He has to. It has to be a full commitment. Every day. It is going to be gruelling from a martial arts, gymnastics and stunt perspective. Also emotionally taxing. It’s going to be real.”

McKay’s wording indicates no-one has been set for the role yet, and there’s no production timetable presently in place.
