Batman: Gotham by Gaslight & Batman Ninja
Directors: Sam Liu (“The Killing Joke “) & Jumpei Mizusaki (“Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure”)
Cast: Bruce Greenwood, Koichi Yamadera, Jennifer Carpenter, Tara Strong
Details: Two very different direct-to-video animated films based on the Batman comics hit this year and offer ‘Elseworld’ takes on the Caped Crusader that vastly differ from the usual run of the mill DC animated universe films. “Gotham by Gaslight” adapts the Mike Mignola comic about a Victorian Era Dark Knight in pursuit of Jack the Ripper.

“Batman Ninja” on the other hand uses CG-enhanced anime (designed by “Afro Samurai” creator Takashi Okazaki) to tell its story of Batman and other key members of Gotham City finding themselves thrown through time and landing in feudal Japan – only to discover Joker has become the most powerful man in the country and is leveraging his power to alter Japan’s history.

“Superman: Red Son” Animated Film Talk

superman-red-son-animated-feature-talk.jpg

With the release of “Batman: Gotham By Gaslight” next weekend on Digital HD, the project marks one of the first animated adaptations of a “Batman” ‘Elseworlds’ title. Should it be a success, animation legend Bruce Timm already has another one in mind.

Speaking with Comicbook.com at a Q&A during Gaslight’s premiere, Timm says that the story he’d most like to tackle next is “Superman: Red Son”. That iconic work by Mark Millar is set in a world where young Kal-El’s landed the Soviet Union rather than Kansas and lead to the Kryptonian becoming the hero of the USSR instead of a champion of ‘truth, justice, and the American way’.

The immediate next DC animated feature is “Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay” which hits in the Spring, the anime-inspired “Batman Ninja,” and the two-film Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen features hitting late 2018/early 2019.

That looks incredible! To hell with all that Teen Titans Go noise, this is what the fans want!

Of course, I'm not financially able to spend money on yet another streaming service, but I will shell out the cash for this when it hits Blu-Ray.

“Batman: Long Halloween” Animated Films Coming?

Considered one of the most definitive Batman stories of all time, Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s “The Long Halloween” may finally be getting an animated adaptation.

Revenge of the Fans reports DC is in the process of developing a two-part adaptation of Loeb’s story, which takes place during the early days of The Dark Knight’s reign as Gotham’s protector.

The comic story focuses on his efforts to bring down the mysterious Holiday Killer and ties heavily into the Falcone mob family and the origin of Two-Face. Troy Baker, Jensen Ackles, Naya Rivera, Titus Welliver and David Dastmalchian will reportedly all provide voice work though role specifics are under wraps.

“Superman: Red Son” Animated Film Planned?

Following news of a two-part DCAU direct-to-video adaptation of “Batman: The Long Halloween” being in development, Revenge of the Fans (via CBM) reports that an animated feature based on Mark Millar’s iconic Elseworlds comic “Superman: Red Son” is reportedly in the works.

In fact, the adaptation has seemingly set its voice cast already with the site offering a cast list. It includes Amy Acker, Anna Vocino, Diedrich Bader, Greg Chun, Jim Ward, Jason Isaacs, Jason Spisak, Jim Meskimen, Paul Williams, Phil Lamarr, Phil Morris, Roger Craig Smith, Sasha Roiz, Tara Strong, Travis Willingham, Vanessa Marshall, William Salyers and Winter Zoli co-star.

In the wake of the report being published, Bader reportedly posted a tweet saying “Excited be a part of this” before deleting it. The original comic is a ‘what if’ scenario in which Kal-El’s ship crashes in the Soviet Union instead of Kansas.

The three-issue series was published in 2003 and was nominated for the Eisner Award for best-limited series.

SuperBroMovies writer Daniel Richtman says Warners is looking to develop an animated feature-length adaptation of the future-set “Batman Beyond” cartoon series which will hit cinemas in 2022, one with an Asian-American voice actor for main role of Terry McGinnis.

The success of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and the prohibitive expense of doing a “Batman Beyond” film in live-action makes this plausible, but there’s no indication this is anything more than rumor at this point.

Just days out from the release of “Justice League vs. The Fatal Five” on Digital HD, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is already turning its attention to its next film in the DC animated universe – “Batman: Hush”.

Based on the seminal 2002-2003 comic storyline by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee, the story follows a mysterious new heavily bandaged villain known only as Hush who sets out to destroy both Batman’s crime-fighting career and Bruce Wayne’s personal life. Who is this figure?

Today, Warners has revealed the movie’s voice cast which includes several DCAU veterans. The film stars Jason O’Mara as Batman, Jennifer Morrison as Selina Kyle, Jerry O’Connell as Superman, Rebecca Romijn as Lois Lane, Rainn Wilson as Lex Luthor, Sean Maher as Nightwing, Bruce Thomas as Jim Gordon, Stuart Allan as Damian Wayne, and James Garrett as Alfred.

Additional cast members are Maury Sterling as Thomas Elliot, Geoffrey Arend as Riddler, Vanessa Williams as Amanda Waller, Jason Spisak as Joker, Adam Gifford as Bane, Dachie Alessio as Lady Shiva, Peyton List as both Batgirl and Poison Ivy, and Tara Strong as a reporter.

The film is directed by Justin Copeland and written by Ernie Altbacker. It is slated to hit Blu-ray, DVD and Digital this summer.
