All things cooking.........

Are you any good?

Food Network/Cooking Channel personalities

Any in particular stand out to you? I prefer to watch Nancy Fuller (Farmhouse Rules), Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman), & Giada De Laurentiis (whatever the hell she's calling her show now).

I used to be able to watch Guy Fieri's cooking show (Guy's Big Bite), but now it's just hard to follow.

By the way, this doesn't necessarily have to apply to the US... Any place that receives these two channels or something similar can reply. ;)

I don't have Cooking Channel anymore, and I hardly ever watch Food Network these days. I like watching cooking shows, and the majority of the actual cooking shows are on when I'm at work, and there are so few of the personalities I actually like watching anymore. If I have the day off and there's nothing else I'm doing/watching, I like Giada, Ina Garten, and Anne Burrell. I got out of watching Food Network when they, like every other flipping channel on the planet, decided that reality/game shows were better than actual programming.

Actually, that's where I'm going to leave off, because this will lead into a long rant about reality shows, and since I'm in the minority on the subject, I'll spare everyone my insanity.

Trust me, you're not alone on this subject... I can't stand them either.

In a spirit of transatlantic outreach I have to admit to a morbid thrill at Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares USA - except too much swearing gets bleeped out on the downloads. They knew what they were getting into when they volunteered to be on the show!
For actual cooking I'd like to eat - Hairy Bikers, Rick Stein and OK - yes - a spot of Jamie O when the fancy takes me...

You should see some of the memes that I've come across that are derived from that show... Hilarious.

I will admit, Gordon Ramsey's shows are a couple of the reality shows I actually get into, but I think it's because he's so damned entertaining.

There are some out there that I have found myself enjoying. I got into the first couple of seasons of Face/Off on SyFy, simply because I love movie magic. But after that, it got just as annoying as all of the other reality shows out there. And I will confess, my wife got me into the first few seasons of America's Next Top Model. Because, you know, models.

Haven't seen Face/Off - don't tell me it's a plastic surgery surgery show?
Ramsey aside I really don't see much reality TV except Hotel Inspector, a little Bake Off and my favourite - Monkey Life!

It's a competition for make-up artists. Over the seasons, they have done some really great challenges, but some felt like a rip-off of others' ideas, like when they did make-up for a horror themed WIZARD OF OZ (cool concept, but it's been done by so many people). The first few seasons were pretty good, and the artists were original, but after a while, you knew they producers were looking for the typical "reality show" contestants, like "Who can give us the most drama", or "who will fit certain stereotypes". It just got kind of annoying with some of the folks cast in it.

Ah, now I get it! Don't think we've had that in the UK yet, although lipsynching has now arrived, so it's only a matter of time.

The sorts of reality show I worry about (but can't help watching) tend to feature professionals on their uppers being bailed out by a Big Name- they might get shouted at, nagged and derided as half-wits, but they do get exposure, and whopping makeovers to their properties into the bargain.
The one I'd forgotten before is Supernanny - to come close to admitting on camera you are bad parents and your kids are brats /weirdos / puppicidal maniacs is very brave... but I assume they never broadcast the failures.

My wife used to watch Supernanny. I caught some of it, and always thought that, while the families were just awful, the nanny herself was a smug bint. I usually wanted to smack her as much as the worthless parents.

Fair enough (and good evening to you, sir) - but probably not half as much as she wanted to smack the twittish parents time after time ... I gather you have successfully reared the next generation of Metals without TV personality interventions, and survived with soul and sanity intact, so you clearly have a valid point. Supernanny popularised having a naughty step for the kids - pretty sure the parents needed a naughty shed - locked in till they promised to get a bloody grip!
It's odd but there's a tonal shift when the likes of Supernanny and Gordon Ramsey shift there wares from the original home-grown operation to the US. It seems to me, at least, a lot more frenetic and formulaic and psychobabblish. Horses for courses - or at least, what TV stations think their audiences want. And as we all know that's at least a 35% insult to out collective intelligence.

two extra rations of pudding tonight.
Mrs Metal rations your pudding? Outrageous! I like her already...
What are Iowa's favourite puddings these days? Are you a sherry trifle man or more of a spotted dick lover Maybe the extra rations were one of each - that would be very stylish. Spring is here (ish) in England, so it's time to retire the custard, and for me start thinking about the tiramisu.

Usually, it's just whatever we have on hand. Sometimes cake, or brownies, or cookies (you know, biscuits). Last night it was ice cream.
