“Joker,” “Flash” & More DC Film News


For now there’s only three DC films on the schedule – “Aquaman” for Dec 2018, “Shazam” for early 2019, and “Wonder Woman 1984” which just began filming this week. Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is also in development with the first draft of the script is now with the studio.

Also in development is the Joaquin Phoenix-led The Joker film which is expected to launch a new sub-label under the DC Films division, possibly labelled DC Black, and is said to be sporting a 1980s gangster tone and an economical $55 million budget.

Then there’s “The Flash” movie starring Ezra Miller which will now be a much lighter and more fun affair. John Francis Daly and Jonathan Goldstein helm the film which will begin production in early 2019 and will likely be the next DCEU film to go into production.

Wan On Patrick Wilson’s “Aquaman” Villain

An interesting element of James Wan’s underwater-set DC Comics adaptation “Aquaman” will be the villains. The film boasts several, though the lions share easily goes to Patrick Wilson’s King Orm (aka. Ocean Master) who declares war on the surface world, which Aquaman doesn’t agree with.

Speaking about the character with EW, Wan says you’ll be able to empathise with the antagonist, Aquaman’s half-brother, even if you don’t agree with the actions he’s taking:

“He’s kind of an eco-warrior…He’s got a very clear gripe with the surface world, which has been polluting his oceans for centuries. And that’s something for me – I’m sure for you too – that’s very easy to understand. If somebody was just constantly polluting our air and ruining how we lived.

Patrick is such a talented actor and a chameleon as well, he can disappear into any role…Orm’s got a soft spot for his brother who lives on the surface world and if anything just wants him to rule Atlantis and the world together, but his brother doesn’t see it that way. A lot of the clashes they have stem from their different upbringings. So I didn’t want to cast a typical villain actor.”

Our next big glimpse of “Aquaman” is expected to take place next month with the trailer reveal at San Diego Comic Con.

Taking a page out of the Marvel book, Warner Bros. Pictures is going early overseas with the release of their highly-anticipated DC superhero film “Aquaman”.

Specifically, the James Wan-directed comics adaptation will open in China on December 7th, two weeks before its States-side debut on December 21st. The release is the first in the world with Australia, Russia, Singapore and Denmark all getting it on December 13th and the UK on December 14th.

The “Aquaman” Film Is Now Complete

Filmmaker James Wan has taken to Instagram to confirm that work on his film adaptation of the DC Comics title “Aquaman” is now 100% complete.

The project, which will be Warner Bros. Pictures only DC Comics movie title this year, has been in the works for at least two years and marks the first real film of the new DCEU-era – one which is more standalone, lighter and willing to take risks.

The Jason Momoa-led “Aquaman” is slated to open throughout mid-December around much of the world and will wash up on U.S. shorts on December 21st.

“Aquaman” Runtime & Tidal Wave Talk

The runtime for James Wan’s “Aquaman” film has been revealed with the mostly underwater adventure film clocking in at 143 minutes – just six minutes shy of “Wonder Woman”.

With the DC Comics adaptation effectively complete, reports have gone up in the last few days that the finished cut has been tested and received a very positive response with the tone of the film drawing “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Ant-Man and The Wasp” comparisons. Critics reviews aren’t expected for a few more weeks.

A new photo, which you can see above, has also landed online and shows Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry surrounded by a tidal wave. EW premiered the photo and included some comments from Wan about both the shot and the five-minute sizzle reel released last month with its stellar one take action sequence involving running on rooftops:

“The context of that photo is basically the Atlantic coastline is being hit by tidal waves and it’s not actually an attack from Atlantis but a warning sign of what’s to come. It’s basically a message from King Orm [Patrick Wilson] and he’s throwing our warships and waste back onto the land.

The trailer and images don’t really do it justice. The crazy part is there’s so much movie, what’s out there has barely scratched the surface. That’s the crazy thing is that one long take shot that everybody seems excited about in the trailer, that’s only half the shot. And it doesn’t have the context of how it comes to play.”

“Aquaman” begins its global rollout in early-mid December ahead of a December 21st U.S. launch.

James Wan’s undersea superhero adventure tale “Aquaman” has launched in China this week, ahead of much of the rest of the world, with the film on track for an $85+ million opening weekend.

That would be the highest opening for a DCEU movie, tracking ahead of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” by 54%, “Justice League” by 69% and more than double “Wonder Woman”.

It also has 85% of the Middle Kingdom market share. “Aquaman” opens in forty more markets this coming Friday, and then in North America on December 21st.

“Aquaman” is tracking for a $65 million opening weekend next weekend, and has already surpassed the entire run of “Wonder Woman” in China. Check out Pitbull’s “Ocean to Ocean” song for the film which heavily samples Toto’s “Africa”.

“Aquaman” To Dominate Xmas Box-Office


Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Aquaman” seems to be the must-see title going into the Christmas holiday with the film on track to earn up to $70 million from Friday to Sunday and up to $120 million by the end of Christmas Day on Tuesday. Advance ticket sales for the film are already outpacing “Wonder Woman” by the same point in its release.

“Aquaman” came in at a costly $200 million budget but by today will have made that much in China alone since its release a week-and-a-half ago. So far the film is on track for a $300 million worldwide haul with that number set to swell once it opens in most territories this week.
