Fun Anyone else like sitting next to a nice fire?

Just outside, chilling doing a slow burn all night. Enjoying the smell of the smoke, popping of the wood in the fire, & sizzling of the green wood dripping bubble sap. Nice starry night, clear moon in the sky, the sound of frogs off in the distance. Just chilling on the back porch with my hound Flash sitting next to me enjoying the fire as well.

Anyone else taking the time to sit out back and just listening to nature?

I had a lot of outside parties with a nice fire burning. It always ended with a few people left, just sitting by the fire, starring into it.
I don't like nature by night, too many moths. Actually, I also don't really like nature by day. walking in high grass with frogs leaving away from you, standing still on a anthill, not my thing.

If we're at my sisters then there's marshmallows, smores, hobo pies, hotdogs, beers, and a big turn out. Last night was just me burning down the brush that has fallen over the last few months. Cleaning up the yard for now grass cutting season is upon us. Already was bitten last night by a dreaded mosquito. Didn't know they were out already.

One of the best things about camping is sitting by campfire drinking some ice cold beers.

It's a bit too urban where I am to do much of that unfortunately - but when I get back home for summer I'll have my own back garden - at least the neighbour over the back fence has replaced the evil-smelling propane barbeque (not that he ever issued an invite, just a foul stench) - now there's a trampoline on which his daughters bounce relentlessly, so I guess pulling a cork from something red and going topless won't work - I'll make it two corks in that case.

What are smores and hobo pies please?

For s'mores, you take two graham crackers and a piece of chocolate, and set them aside. Then, you roast a marshmallow. When it is at your desired toastiness, you take one graham cracker and the chocolate, lay the marshmallow on it, then grab the other cracker and press it together and pull the stick out of the marshmallow, to make a sandwich. It's gooey, sticky, messy, deliciousness.

Hobo pies, or hobo dinners, is a foil pack containing ground meat or meat chunks, potatoes, the veg of your choice (I like onions and carrots), seasoning and butter. You set that on the grill or in the fire, and take it out after you stick a fork in it and the veg feels fork tender. Open that up on a plate and it's amazing.

Now if I were inviting selected Forum chums - you and Mrs Metal for example - to a Bonfire NIght celebration (we're English - we wait till November for nearly guaranteed crap weather - it'd be potatoes baked in their jackets in the embers (but secretly given a good head start in the oven by your mum earlier in the day) with plenty of butter, and parkin, and cinder toffee, and treacle toffee apples. Funny don't remember what we were given to drink as kids, but now I'd be firing up some serious spicy mulled cider.

Does this make sense to an Iowa man? I remember having to rescue (euphemism for "remove from vicinity of alcohol and escort to bedroom") an elderly Virginian client. She'd been perched on a bar stool drinking what she maintained was apple juice. Going by the way the legs weren't working too well under her, we'd hit the cross-pond misunderstanding that here cider is stronger than beer and our term for apple juice is "apple juice". She reckoned that alcohol is only in "hard cider" and she'd ordered the regular non-alcoholic sort. I reckon that you don't need to be put to bed to sleep off the effects of apple juice.

Indeed. Here in the states we have apple juice, which is amber in color and you can see through it; then there's cider, which is like juice, but it's cloudy, because they don't strain out anything. It has a much better flavor than regular apple juice; and we have hard cider, which is delicious. I recall having cider explained to me as a youngling, because we watched so much British television, and as a kid I didn't understand why apple cider was sold in bars. I can see someone without my impeccable upbringing not knowing the difference, and just ordering cider and getting pissed and not knowing why.

True, true. And beware especially of the cloudy cider - if you can't see through that it's lethal scrumpy (people who don;t mind hard stares might call it "artisinal"), usually farmhouse-scale make and much more alcoholic than the regular shop-bought cider.
And avoid pubs with wobbly handwritten signs in the window saying "no snakebites" (half cider half beer/lager), because the sort of clientele who walk in and demand those hellbrews do not make for relaxing company (especially if they;ve drunk a couple at earlier watering holes).

The seemingly endless rain over the city of Greycott shows no sign of receding. Residents have adapted to the inconvenience and spend much of their time indoors producing art and literature. Their works are of such quality that the city has become a cultural centre.

I love sitting in my back yard around my fire pit. It is nothing special. Similar to what you see below. But it serves its purpose. Sometimes when I am burning in it my neighbors will come over with beer. Often we sit by the fire drinking beer till late into the night.

In late spring, summer and fall if I burned the night before I will get another fire going in the morning from the still hot coals and have one or two coffees by the fire. Great way to start the day!
