Recently Seen, Part 2 (Mar 2017)

I've never been on FaceBook and have never "liked" a post or ad or news story or whatever else, before I did it a few times here b/c it seemed like a thing. But I agree having 12 icons to weigh in with an opinion is ridiculous. We are not toddlers. You'd think we could "use our words."

The Hudsucker Proxy is my favorite Coen Bros. movie, hands down. So many great lines and scenes! The "invention of the hula hoop" montage set to the music of Khachaturian is one of my favorite scenes in any film. That is inspired filmmaking right there. Interesting trivia: the three follows...

Breaking News (2004). Another good effort by Johnnie To, a director I have come to really appreciate for HK action/drama. Shamed by the televised escape of five bank robbers, the Hong Kong police pull out all the stops to catch them. When they happen upon the gang's hideout, they decide to...

    Philippine Movies Thread

Is The Maid (2005) considered to be a Filipino movie? I believe it was produced in Singapore, but if I recall, the movie language was Tagalog. Not sure where it falls for categorization.

Review Weekend Film Club - Part I

No need to make apologies. A 3 or 3.5 rating for me, while not a gushing rave, is certainly 2 hours well spent. I got all the relationships figured out in plenty of time for the drama and tragedy to be effective. No, I didn't love it, but I would certainly watch more in the genre. And, God's...

    Review No Blood, No Tears

Time for Monday's review! Let's go back to Korea for this week's movie. No Blood, No Tears (2002). Previous reviews: 2/13: A Tale of Two Sisters 2/20: Comrades, Almost a Love Story 2/27: A Chinese Tall Story 3/6: The Mystery of Rampo 3/9: Clean 3/13: The Bride with White Hair...

    Review The Mystery of Rampo

I'm glad you checked it out. As far as the "murder" goes, I agree that it wasn't pre-meditated. But it seemed pretty clear to me that once the lady in the animated story discovered that her weak and sickly husband had inadvertently locked himself in the trunk, she saw her chance to escape the...

Review Weekend Film Club - Part I

The first half was a rather strange experience. Sorrtof like a Chinese version of Beach Blanket Bingo, only with hunting in the mountains rather than partying on the beach. But they did get a couple of songs in, and there was a campfire. I was a little confused at first about the family...

Ok, I watched it! Am I supposed to post comments now? Or wait until Monday... ??

Oh, I'm up for MMD's. I was just trying to not assume kung-fu action costume historicals, b/c that doesn't seem to be your bag. (I'd be all over that, though!). I just checked my main source for HK DVDs (DDD House), and while most on your list are not available (Auntie Lan and Whose Baby Is...

Recently Seen, Part 2 (Mar 2017)

I'd be glad to watch whatever is recommended. I really hate watching anything on my computer, and if possible, will just order a DVD version. However, if no other option I'll do the YouTube thing. I think one of the Shaw Brothers dramas would be a good start. That would expand my horizons a bit.

Review The Shaw Brothers studios -- but not Kung Fu

I have one on my DVD shelf -- Facets of Love (1973). According to my notes, I watched it in July 2008 and gave it 3.5 / 5 stars, but I'd have to start watching it again to remind myself of the plot. I do know it is a historical costume drama with erotic/romantic focus. Ok, I looked up a plot...

Recently Seen, Part 2 (Mar 2017)

Did someone post or comment on this movie? I missed it. But I can confirm "skip it." It's better than a 1-star rating, but nothing really to recommend. A young actor fumbles through two physical relationships with women--one of whom he does not like much, and one of whom he is very fond. I...

Recently Seen, Part 2 (Mar 2017)

All for Love (aka My Lovely Week / The Most Beautiful Week of My Life). My sixth viewing. Korean movie with eclectic intertwining of relationship storylines. Starts off light and (somewhat) confusing, what with all the different relationships, but ends up engaging and powerful. One of the...

Review The Bride with White Hair

Time for Monday's review. The Bride with White Hair. This was not an assigned review, but one I wrote just b/c I loved the movie so much. Previous reviews: 2/13: A Tale of Two Sisters 2/20: Comrades, Almost a Love Story 2/27: A Chinese Tall Story 3/6: The Mystery of Rampo 3/9: Clean...

Fun Watching Movies with my Wife

Freedom, yah, but frustrating (for me). We were watching Infernal Affairs with some friends and about 15 minutes from the end of the movie, my wife asked me something along the lines of "Why did that guy just do that?" "Because that's what undercover police officers do." "He's a police...

Fun Watching Movies with my Wife

My nickname for my wife is "Princess of the Mall" LOL We have a similar arrangement to what you described. I have my man-cave home theater and watch whatever I want. She has an internet connection and spends all her viewing time watching Korean TV. Lots of K-dramas (romantic and historical)...

Fun Watching Movies with my Wife

So, we're visiting the Baltimore Aquarium way back when. One of the exhibits was on sea lions, and there was a short narrated film loop (5-7 minutes or something like that) that played in a side room. We mainly went in to rest our feet for a few minutes, so we plopped ourselves down and...

Fun Watching Movies with my Wife

Since my wife doesn't have any interest in movies, except for the occasional romantic comedy, she has no idea about Hollywood or what's showing. But every once in a while a fella wants to take his wife to a movie, ya know? True story from about 10 years ago.... Me: Let's go see a movie...

Fun Watching Movies with my Wife

LOL. I have about 500 DVDs on the shelf, at least 150 of them for Korean movies. When she really wants for us to watch something together, I tell her to pick something herself. Inevitably, she'll go to the Korean DVDs and start looking around. I already know which movie she will pick. Out...
