You're right. I made a bit of a hash of it when I set it up, too many options, when I should have kept it simpler. I wish I could simplify it, but have had a look and it seems it won't let you edit or delete it in any way, beyond adding yet even more options.

It's really interesting to read LeCarre on how much Guinness influenced his written conception of Smiley. I read the books after seeing the series, and even though it was true that Smiley's physical description differed from Sir Alec's, I found it impossible to picture anyone but him in my mind's eye.

Sean Connery also had an influence on Ian Fleming in the early 1960s, when he was writing the last few 007 novels and short stories before he died. This helped the late author to decide upon his agent's background and parentage, when he was writing 007's obituary in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE.

Having done a thread for all the first 24 Bonds, I thought I might as well expand this from just a Daniel Craig (will he be back or not) thread and, closing the admittedly lopsided poll, turn it into a more wide ranging speculation thread for Bond 25. What people would like to see in terms of not just casting, but storyline etc.?

Where - and what - next for Bond?

I expect that they might continue the storyline - James Bond and Ernst Blofeld's family relationship - that was begun in SPECTRE. I think it's completely ridiculous and entirely unnecessary to the future of the film series, so I expect that's the path they'll probably follow.

What next? Will it turn out that Auric Goldfinger is his long lost cousin? Idiotic.

That's interesting. I never knew Fleming had incorporated any of Connery's personal bio into any of the novels. I don't think I've ever read YOLT, this is a good reason to pick it up.

As a 007 fan, I'm bound to say that the fact that it's a James Bond novel is reason enough. However, I'm sure that's just me.

It would be interesting to know if any other authors have had similar experiences. I've often wondered if David Morrell tweaked his invention, John Rambo, after Sylvester Stallone took on the role. In the novel FIRST BLOOD, he's described as being not much more than a kid... One day I must read the sequels to find out.

Daniel Craig is ready to sign on to return as James Bond according to a new report at Page Six. Several sources tell the paper that franchise producer Barbara Broccoli has “just about persuaded Daniel Craig to do one more Bond movie.”

Broccoli produced Craig’s recent off-Broadway stage production of “Othello” with David Oyelowo, which won Craig several acting plaudits. Sources for the paper say:

“Daniel was very pleased with how ‘Othello’ went and the great reviews. Now Daniel’s talks with Barbara are going in the right direction. They have a script – screenwriting duo Neal Purvis and Robert Wade [who”ve penned several Bond movies] are writing and they’ll go into production as soon as Daniel is ready to commit.”

The source adds that Broccoli apparently has gone off Tom Hiddleston for the role with the actor’s public romance with Taylor Swift having “sealed his fate with Bond producers”. The report comes a year and a half after Craig famously burned bridges in the “Spectre” press tour saying he doesn’t want to return to the role.

It sounds to me like he just needed a change of pace and a rest. A bit of a shame, because I was hoping they might cast someone else, who was closer to the Bond of the novels.

However, when it comes to the role of 007, you should NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN.

Yeah I think he'll do one more. I really don't want Tom Hiddleston to take over the role. He's way too pleased with himself. I'd prefer Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, or someone relatively low-profile

James Bond 25 Rumor: Sherlock Helmer in the Running to Direct


Film and television director Paul McGuigan (BBC’s Sherlock) is rumored to be in consideration to direct Bond 25. Since Daniel Craig took over the role of 007 in the James Bond franchise 11 years ago, the film series has consistently suffered from ups and downs. Screaming out of the gate in 2006 with director Martin Campbell with Casino Royale, Craig proved the world was ready to accept him as a blond Bond, but 007 quickly fell out of favor with fans again with the underwhelming Quantum of Solace from helmer Marc Forster in 2008.

The franchise’s fortunes changed with the next film in 2012, as American Beauty Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes pulled the film series out its doldrums in 2012 with Skyfall, arguably one of the best films in the entire Bond franchise, suffered a sophomore slump in 2015 when Spectre couldn’t quite match the brilliance of its predecessor.

With Mendes out of the picture for Bond 25, Bond producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are on the hunt for a new filmmaker to take the helm, and if a rumor pans out, it will be McGuigan. According to IndieWire, Wilson and Broccoli are impressed with McGuigan’s indie drama Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool that the filmmaker is being considered to take the director’s chair for Bond 25. The outlet observes that the choice of a director like McGuigan makes sense for the Bond franchise, since previous helmers like Mendes and Forster (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland) both came from the independent film world.

I agree that Le Carre definitely trumps Fleming- on film, that is. The Brosnan Bond films were, on reflection, fairly average, but CASINO ROYALE and SKYFALL with Daniel Craig were terrific. You should give them a whirl, Carol.

Chris Nolan’s Company Linked To “Bond 25”?

The IMDb page for the next film in the James Bond franchise, which will either be Daniel Craig’s final outing or a new actor’s debut effort in the role, has had a small but interesting update discovered by MI6 HQ.

Company credits for the film list Syncopy as a production company on the entry alongside the usual Bond franchise trio of Danjaq, EON Productions, and MGM.

Syncopy is the London-based production company owned by Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas. Syncopy’s past titles include every Nolan-directed film since “Batman Begins” along with films he produced like “Man of Steel” and “Transcendence”.

This has already led to speculation Nolan may be directing the next film. It’s not an out of character choice – he’s certainly got the talent, he’s a Brit, he’s a massive Bond fan, he’s talked about the possibility with the producers over the years, and he hasn’t set his next project after “Dunkirk”.

He previously has said scheduling issues were the main problem with his involvement, could the timing finally be right? Remember that this is the IMDB, entries can be edited by members and are not necessarily verified – especially during the pre-production phase – so take this as VERY much rumor for now.
