You might like the work of Taika Waititi. What we do in the shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople in particular (he's now moved on to directing the next Thor movie).

Forgive me for not including years, message me if you need them (I'll go find them so I'm ready)
Also.... love, love, love that you go old-school studio days! Hopefully you'll find things on my list
that you haven't already seen. There are a number of them I genuinely wish I could watch for the
"first time" all over again. But I did put it together in the hope you'll find new treasures in my list
that you can add to yours. Many got no marketing and are under-appreciated gems.

Bringing Up Baby (Hepburn & Grant)
Nothing Sacred (Lombard)
My Man Godfrey (Lombard & William Powell)
Libeled Lady (Harlow, Powell, Tracey & Myrna Loy)
Death at a Funeral 2007 (Make sure it's the Brit version! The remake is worse than Uncle Alfie's poo!)
Noises Off (C. Burnett, M. Caine, J. Ritter, N. Sheridan, M. Linn-Baker, M. Henner, C. Reeve, et. al...)
I have to "second" Stranger Than Fiction, it's just that good.
The entire "Thin Man" series (Loy & Powell)
Dodgeball (V. Vaughn, J. Long et. al... quirky and hysterical)
Easy A (E. Stone, S. Tucci, P. Clarkson, et. al...)
Big Trouble (S. Tucci, D. Farina, R. Russo, T. Allen, et. al...)
Get Shorty (J. Travolta, R. Russo, D. Devito, G. Hackman, D. Lindo, et. al...)
State & Main (A. Baldwin, P.S. Hoffman, S.J. Parker, W. Macy, et. al...)
Gun Shy (S. Bullock, L. Neeson brilliant ensemble)
His Girl Friday (C. Grant, R. Russell)
Fido (C.A. Moss, B. Connolly) tongue-in-cheek 50's "Zombie Pet" movie
Shrek (M. Myers, C. Diaz, E. Murphy)
Very Bad Things (1998 pitch-black comedy by Peter Berg)
Major League (R. Russo, T. Berenger, D. Haysbert, W. Snipes, et. al...)
The Incredibles (turns the whole notion of "superhero movies" on it's ear!"

I really, truly hope you find new things to love somewhere in the list! :emoji_hugging: :emoji_fingers_crossed:

I've been trying to find a copy of this, because it looks great. Have you seen a 2010 Belgian film called VAMPIRES? It's kind of the same, but the humor is more subdued. It gets pretty dark at times, but a pretty good watch.

I'm boggling so much at the overlap of films I'd say are my all time greats + stuff I've never heard of, in the same lists> Thank you Elanor, for starting this thread.
My list - for today, maybe not tomorrow though:

Mellow chuckles: Sense and Sensiblilty, Genevieve, Four Weddings
Belly laughs: Gregory's Girl, Young Frankenstein, Amelie
Falling down hooting: Blues Brothers, Princess Bride, Sexy Beast

In no particular order, my 4.5 or 5-star rated comedies are:

Airplane!
Tropic Thunder
Ruthless People
The Naked Gun
A Fish Called Wanda
Hot Shots!
The Hudsucker Proxy
L.A. Story
Major League
Flying Dagger
Top Secret!
The Wedding Singer
Beerfest
The Hangover
The Kentucky Fried Movie
Happy Gilmore
Office Space
Wayne's World
A Chinese Torture Chamber Story
Dr. Strangelove
Men Suddenly in Black
My Sassy Girl

I tried to stick with films that are pretty much comedies through-and-through, rather than other 5-star films that have comedic moments, such as A Christmas Story or Election or The Princess Bride or Scream or Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Some of these are a judgment call.

Love your list - pretty much an interesting combination of "totally agree" and "never heard of" - so that means I share a lot of your taste and the ones that are new to me should probably work for me too.
Love that you have LA Story in there, so puzzled that you'd put Princess Bride as a judgement call - my ruie of thumb is that any film that mostly makes you hoot out loud then also makes you cry (a bit - |I'm an as tough-as-parkin Yorkshirewoman) is a winner.
Lock Stock for me was a once-is-enough fan-fic attempt at The Italian Job, even though I actually worked once with one of the hard nut cockneys in the opening poker game (respect to the late Syd G.- he furthered the cause of fringe theatre in the outskirts of Sarf London by means one could only call Mob-handed...)

Where are you on Python films? If I'm right all but 2 on your list are American - I think you;d enjoy branching out a bit more! ( I PROMISE the Brits aren't all about Bridget Jones and Love Actually.

Well, A Fish Called Wanda, while not Python per se, certainly has Python fingerprints on it, and I love this movie. I've seen episodes of MP, and I do like a lot of their sketch comedy. Holy Grail was good, but not quite reaching my rating threshold.

From my list, Flying Dagger is a Hong Kong wuxia comedy/spoof; and A Chinese Torture Chamber Story is a Hong Kong Category III film that had me rolling. I post a review every Monday in the Asian movie forum. Tell you what--next Monday I'll post a review of it; perhaps you will check it out. Men Suddenly in Black is a Hong Kong comedy (which I will also post a review of at some point); and My Sassy Girl, of course, is a Korean romantic comedy. I could actually list a number of other Korean "comedy" films, but so many are genre amalgams that start off one way and then turn into something quite different (melodrama for instance).

Thanks for the heads up - will do my best to catch up with that (heading away from my computer for the Easter hols at the weekend - some call it "digital detox", I say "oh shit - the weeds in the garden need to be oppressed and replaced...."

Honestly CS, I thought I was the only person on the planet who knew of and loved this movie! If you haven't seen it, check out: Death at a Funeral (UK version came out before the US remake and is far superior).... we laugh till we cry every time we watch it. And since you've listed everything I could think of at the moment I'll only add:

Libeled Lady (Jean Harlot, Spencer Tracy, William Powell, Myrna Loy) it's worth it for the fishing scene in the river alone!

Death at a Funeral (UK version
I have been meaning to watch this one. I think it was on Netflix for a while, and I never got a chance to view it. I saw the US version on night on TV, and thought it was decent, then I found out it was a remake, and after looking it up, realized that it had to be better. As always, US producers figure our audiences are too stupid to understand foreign properties, or they honestly believe they can do it better. They can't.
