Jonathan Frakes To Helm “Picard” Episodes
Commander Riker himself, “Star Trek: The Next Generation” star Jonathan Frakes, has confirmed that he’s set to re-team with his old captain, Patrick Stewart, for the upcoming Jean-Luc Picard series at CBS All Access.
That re-teaming though is only behind-the-scenes it would seem. Frakes has had a prolific TV directing career over the past decade and recently appeared on the podcast Writer Experience where he confirmed he’s set to direct episodes of not just the Picard show but several other genre shows:
“Now my season looks like Star Trek: Discovery – the new wonderful Star Trek series, the Picard show – which Patrick [Stewart] is launching, and The Orville – which is some people’s new Star Trek. And I just finished The Gifted, which is a sort of X-Men Marvel origins show. So, I am back in that world.”
Frakes directed an episode of “Orville” and ‘Discovery’ in their first seasons, and has done two for this season of the latter. Frakes has directed Stewart as Picard before in numerous episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” along with the films “Star Trek: First Contact” and “Star Trek: Insurrection”.

First “Picard” Series Character Breakdowns?
Many details about CBS All Access’ upcoming “Star Trek” spin-off series, the one featuring the return of Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, remain unknown.
We do know the ten-episode first season is apparently set around the year 2389, a decade after the events of “Star Trek: Nemesis” and twenty years after the end of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”.
Now some more details have emerged via That Hashtag Show which seem to confirm talk that Picard is the only character from the old series that will return for this.
The site reveals that the story is indeed set in the Prime Timeline with the destruction of Romulus two years earlier by a supernova and the subsequent collapse of the Romulan Empire weighing heavily on Picard as he had been closely involved with building a bond between Starfleet’s former enemies and the Federation.
There are also reportedly seven other key characters in the mix:
– Connie. Early 30s African-American woman. Mercenary pilot and widow with a bounty on her head.
– Lawrence. Early 30s man. A thief with a dodgy moral compass, and Picard’s pilot for a mission.
– Starton. Early 30s man. A positronic brain specialist terrified of space travel.
– Dr. Smith. Holographic crewman. Programmed to avoid becoming too self-aware.
– K’Bar. Late teenage male Romulan martial artist extremely devoted to Picard.
– Indira. Early 20s woman. Smart, agile but socially inept and immature.
– Alana. 40s-50s woman. Former intelligence officer – analytical, paranoid, substance abuser.
The site suggests the story will play up into Picard’s love of archaeology with a mission to revolve around some sort of alien artifact that’s been discovered. Production is reportedly set to begin sometime around mid-April with Hanelle Culpepper set to helm the first two episodes of the series.

I think that people's first assumption - and mine - was that Patrick would bring integrity with him to the franchise and make sure that this latest thing would not sully TNG or stray too far from the positive philosophy underlying that show and Classic Trek in general.
But I don't think he is another Leonard Nimoy. So long as he gets his paycheck he'll star in any crap and the shameless thesp in him will relish playing an "affected" Picard who has doubtless strayed ridiculously far from the character he was due to the destruction of Romulus.

Evan Evagora Joins Trek Series “Picard”
Evan Evagora, a young Australian actor of Maori-Cyprian descent, has been cast as a series regular in the still untitled “Star Trek” series following Patrick Stewart’s iconic Captain Jean-Luc Picard character.
Set two decades after the events of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the story will follow the former U.S.S. Enterprise captain in the next phase of his life. Officially no plot or character details are out.
Unofficially it’s said the story will play up into Picard’s love of archaeology with a mission to revolve around some sort of alien artefact that’s been discovered.
Evagora’s role hasn’t been revealed, but it’s very likely to be that of K’Bar – a young Romulan martial artist extremely devoted to Picard. He could potentially be both a protege and bodyguard.
Evagora joins a cast that includes Santiago Cabrera as a skilled thief with a dodgy moral compass who becomes Picard’s pilot for a mission, while Michelle Hurd will play a former Starfleet intelligence officer with a long-term substance abuse problem.
The Picard series will air on CBS All Access in the U.S. and will be distributed concurrently internationally by CBS Studios International. Stewart, Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers.

“Picard” To Be Very Different From “Discovery”
The cast and crew of “Star Trek: Discovery” attended a PaleyFest panel Sunday afternoon in Hollywood and showrunner Alex Kurtzman took the opportunity to tease the franchise’s next addition – the Patrick Steward-led Jean-Luc Picard series.
Set two decades after the events of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the story will follow the former U.S.S. Enterprise captain in the next phase of his life. Officially no plot or character details are out.
Unofficially it’s said the story will play up into Picard’s love of archaeology with a mission to revolve around some sort of alien artefact that’s been discovered.
Kurtzman says the new series will be a “thoughtful psychological portrait” of the character and part of the storyline is Picard finding himself again:
“We all know what Picard means to the world and why he, like so many legendary characters on Star Trek, has endured and what he’s represented. He is some way has to go through a gauntlet to find that again. Things have changed for him and changed him in some ways, and yet he is so deeply and fundamentally still Picard. We’re thrilled at what we’re going to deliver. I know Patrick is really excited. The cast is coming together beautifully. And I will give you nothing else.”
Kurtzman also says he yesterday visited Stewart at his home to read through the script for the first episode of the series:
“I had an amazing experience yesterday. I sat at Patrick’s kitchen table and I heard him read the first episode and I almost cried. It was quite something. He’s at an amazing place in his life. He’s so excited. It’s going to be a very different show from Discovery. The only way this universe, I think, works correctly is if each show is really different and speaks to a different part of Star Trek.”
