Kim Woodburn feels it's a sad world we're living in when people take offence at being called 'darling' at the supermarket checkout. But Kate Smurthwaite says that it’s overfamiliar and rude. Let the debate commence... Broadcast on 26/09/2017
Yes and no. Comedy is subjective, and I believe that most things can be made funny, no matter how offensive. But I have my own biases and experiences that make some comedians' work hard to like. I have raised two children who were both special needs in their own ways. Because of that, I cringe when I hear someone make fun of anyone with disabilities, and still can't believe that we live in a world where saying the N-word makes you a pariah, referring to something as gay is impermissible, but everyone still throws the R-word around or jokes about being Autistic without anyone batting an eye. Also, if your brand of comedy is to go out and specifically be homophobic, transphobic or in any way just spewing the sort of hatred we see on 4chan or Faux News, then you can go fuck yourself. I won't tell them they don't have the right to use their freedom of speech, but I sure as hell don't have to listen to them, and can also use my freedom of speech to tell them that they're a jackass (even though I'll be labeled one of the liberal thought police, because one shouldn't be forced to be decent human beings, it's their right to hate anyone they want). Unlike Mary Whitehouse, I can just turn the channel or not be in attendance for such and event..
It's an age-old question, but.....
Should comedy have boundaries?
