Layton, Clarkson Wanted For “Bond 25”
Bart Layton (“American Animals”) and S.J. Clarkson (“Star Trek 4”) have reportedly emerged as the two new favorite candidates to helm the next James Bond film, whilst a previous contender Yann Demange (“’71”) is now back in the running.
Variety reports that MGM and EON are moving fast on finding a replacement for director Danny Boyle in order to try and get the next James Bond movie back on track and retain its original production schedule following Boyle’s exit a few weeks ago. Sources tell the trade that more meetings with prospective candidates could be taken, but sit-down meetings are currently being worked out for Layton and Clarkson.
Layton helmed the celebrated documentary “The Impostor” and made the shift to narrative features with this year’s critically acclaimed heist thriller “American Animals”. Demange just screened his second film, “White Boy Rick,” to very good reviews at the Telluride Film Festival and a screening for that film will now be set for MGM and EON.
Clarkson got her start over a decade ago on British TV helming numerous episodes of shows like “Hustle,” “Whitechapel” and the beloved original “Life on Mars” before transitioning to U.S. shows like “Dexter,” “Jessica Jones,” “Bates Motel,” “Banshee,” “Smash,” “The Defenders” and recent mini-series like “Collateral” and “Love, Nina”. She’s also slated to take the helm of the next “Star Trek” film (the non-Tarantino one) should it proceed, but otherwise hasn’t directed a feature.
Star Daniel Craig remains attached to Rian Johnson’s next film “Knives Out” which aims to begin shooting in November, before filming starts on Bond at the end of the year. Sources say that Johnson’s project won’t interfere with the production schedule of the next Bond film. Should the 007 film retain its schedule then it will remain on track for a November 2019 release.

Rumours are that he butted heads over casting of the co-stars with Daniel Craig. And Craig won.

Well Craig would win wouldn't he just like the BBC protected Tom Baker over Graham Williams back in the seventies! Upset your star and he walks out and you've no show, but you can always replace a director or a producer any old day of the week, Doc!

“Bond 25” Villain Unsure If He’s Still Onboard
Reports indicated that Danny Boyle’s abrupt exit from production on the next James Bond film happened for numerous reasons, one of which being the casting of the villain and Bond girl.
As star Daniel Craig has final say in his contract, he and Boyle couldn’t agree on Boyle’s choices and so the two parties didn’t come together. Craig’s return is set, while regulars Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Ralph Fiennes are also likely to return as Moneypenny, Q & M respectively. The villain and lead Bond girl haven’t been officially announced as yet.
Boyle had already cast a few roles it seems, including hiring “GI Joe” and “Wonder Woman” actor Saïd Taghmaoui. Speaking with The National, he said:
“I’m supposed to do the next James Bond, playing the lead bad guy. I was cast by Danny Boyle, and just now he left the project, so of course there’s some uncertainty.”
In fact, Taghmaoui isn’t sure where his status with the film rests now and a lot will depend upon how the story changes from here:
“We don’t know who the director will be, and the producers don’t know if they’re going to go Russian or Middle East with the baddie right now. I literally just received a message saying: ‘If they go Middle East, it’s you. If they go Russian, it’s someone else.’ It’s the story of my life. Always on that line between something that could change my life and something that disappears.”
Previous reports had “Cold War” star Tomasz Kot playing the lead villain back when the plan was to have a Russian villain who was intent on starting a new Cold War. At present, the film is still trying to keep its original production start and release date with a new director expected to be selected and announced soon.

Though there’s still no new director hired yet, EON Productions appears to be moving again on the next James Bond film with a key decision – they’re dumping the current script.
The production originally began to develop a film with regular series scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade who’ve been with the franchise since 1999’s “The World is Not Enough”. Director Danny Boyle then came up with a whole new pitch and got writer John Hodge to develop it over months.
As Boyle departed the project last month over creative differences, it wasn’t clear if the producers would retain the script work he’d done so far or not. Now though it looks like they’re not with The Daily Mail reporting that the Hodge-penned script is being scrapped in favor of the Purvis and Wade original treatment that had been developed prior to Boyle’s involvement.
The problem? All they did was a treatment, not an actual script draft which they’re set to work on now and will likely then undergo a polish by the new director and whichever writer that person might bring onboard. All indications are the Purvis and Wade treatment is a different story to the Boyle script and so all previous casting talk is pretty much out the window.
The new film is now facing delays of up to a year before it scores a release which will now probably be in late 2020.

Seydoux & More Return For “Bond 25”
The other week filmmaker Cary Fukunaga says the script for the next James Bond film is still being worked on, and as a result he couldn’t say whether any of the previous film’s co-stars would be returning alongside Daniel Craig.
In fact, the “True Detective” and “Jane Eyre” helmer quite effectively shot down rumors of several actors sitting this one out, saying anyone else who claims to know is lying.

Scott Burns To Heavily Re-Write “Bond 25”
Following on from yesterday’s reports of the new James Bond film being delayed by nearly two months from mid-February to early April 2020, word has come that the project’s script is getting a re-write.
Scott Z. Burns, who co-wrote “The Bourne Ultimatum” and has worked on four Soderbergh movies including “Side Effects,” “Contagion,” “The Informant” and the upcoming “The Laundromat,” has come onboard the film at MGM and Annapurna’s United Artists label.
The Playlist reports that the work will go beyond a mere polish, rather it’s “an overhaul” which will take at least four weeks and as a result he’ll likely get first credit on the script (and a hefty paycheque). Burns, like Chris McQuarrie, is a famed ‘last-minute script doctor’ and has done uncredited work on a bunch of films including “Rogue One”.
Producers have reportedly been after him for months to beef up the script, but Burns has been busy with his feature-length directorial effort “The Report” which debuted to much acclaim at Sundance in January and was bought by Amazon Studios. With that now sitting pretty and likely not requiring press until Fall, Burns is now in the UK at work on the 007 script – not the first time he’s been sought for this franchise either.
Purvis & Wade have often laid the groundwork in the past for other writers to heavily re-write with Paul Haggis taking on that job for both “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace,” and John Logan doing it for “Skyfall” and “Spectre”.
Filming on the new Bond was to begin in early March but has also been pushed back to April. Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”) is slated to helm the film which has already seen delays after Danny Boyle decided to leave the project weeks before it was scheduled to begin. Bond 25 Gets Working Title, Seeks Nyong’o?
It’s a familiar name to Fleming fans, and it was once rumored to be the original title for what was to become Pierce Brosnan’s second 007 film “Tomorrow Never Dies” twenty years ago.
Now a new listing in Production Weekly (via The Guardian) indicates that “Bond 25,” the upcoming fifth and final outing of Daniel Craig in the role, is to film under the working title “Shatterhand”. That’s reportedly the codename being used ahead of the film’s start of shooting at Pinewood Studios on April 6th.
The name was an alias used by Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the novel “You Only Live Twice” and was rumored for ‘Tomorrow’ back when that film was in early development with a potential plot involving the Hong Kong handover and a bio-weapon.
Bond films announce their official titles at a press conference to mark the start of filming so if this will stay the title or not, we’ll know soon.
Meanwhile The Daily Mail reports that Lupita Nyong’o is being sought by both producer Barbara Broccoli and director Cary Joji Fukunaga for the film, though her scheduling availability is an issue.

Malek, Magnussen Up For Next Bond Film
He was first rumored a while back and now several outlets are reporting that Oscar winner Rami Malek is looking likely to take the role of the villain in the next James Bond film. Malek was previously linked to the part but his filming commitments on the final season of “Mr. Robot” seemingly prevented it.
Collider was the first to break the new story, indicating that while meetings with other talent have taken place, producers have worked tirelessly to try and accommodate Malek for both shoots and it looks like the recent delay of filming on the new Bond to early April has seen things worked out.
There are apparently four key new roles being cast – the male villain, a new female MI6 agent, a female accomplice for Bond said to be very akin to Olga Kurylenko’s Camille in “Quantum of Solace,” and a male CIA agent who will effectively serve in the same capacity Jeffrey Wright’s Felix Leiter did in two of the previous Daniel Craig Bond films.
For that latter role, Billy Magnussen is reportedly the top choice says Variety – but it’s not clear if an offer has been made yet. Magnussen previously worked with the new film’s writer-director Cary Joji Fukunaga on the Netflix series “Maniac” and when Fukunaga came onboard he apparently re-wrote the CIA character to be younger and close to Magnussen’s age.
The two female leads however are the most open-ended roles as of now with chemistry reads with Craig still being scheduled. These two characters will reportedly spend the most amount of time with him on screen. All are expected to join Daniel Craig along with confirmed returnees Lea Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris.

It might be due to those re-writes, but one thing is for sure – the supporting cast haven’t seen the script yet. Ralph Fiennes, who will return as M in the film, told BBC 2 Newsnight (via The Playlist) this week:
“I have been affectionately nudging [exec producer] Barbara Broccoli to send me a screenplay and I’m told it will be coming soon, and I know that Daniel [Craig] is playing Bond. I don’t know the name of the film, I haven’t had access to a screenplay yet. I do know they intend to film it later this year. Honestly, I’m not being coy. I don’t know when it starts or what the story is.”

Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle has remained radio silent about his abrupt departure last year as helmer of the next James Bond film. Hired in May, he exited a few months later over apparent creative differences with Cary Fukunaga ultimately replacing him.
Boyle brought scribe John Hodge (“Trainspotting”) on board to write a new script which the studio was on board with initially. However as things progressed, that changed as he explained what happened with Empire Online:
“I learned quite a lot about myself with Bond. I work in partnership with writers and I am not prepared to break it up. We were working very, very well but they didn’t want to go down that route with us. So we decided to part company, and it would be unfair to say what it was because I don’t know what Cary [Fukunaga] is going to do. I got a very nice message from him and I gave him my best wishes.
It is just a great shame. What John [Hodge] and I were doing, I thought, was really good. It wasn’t finished, but it could have been really good. You have to believe in your process and part of that is the partnership I have with a writer. It is like someone coming and saying, ‘Hey, we are going to give you a different editor.’ Those fundamental partnerships are vital.”
Fukunaga is instead helming the film which begins shooting next month ahead of an April 8th 2020 release. Boyle’s next film is the Beatles-themed musical “Yesterday” opening this Summer.

We were working very, very well but they didn’t want to go down that route with us. So we decided to part company, and it would be unfair to say what it was because I don’t know what Cary [Fukunaga] is going to do. I got a very nice message from him and I gave him my best wishes.
It is just a great shame. What John [Hodge] and I were doing, I thought, was really good. It wasn’t finished, but it could have been really good. You have to believe in your process and part of that is the partnership I have with a writer. It is like someone coming and saying, ‘Hey, we are going to give you a different editor.’ Those fundamental partnerships are vital.”
Fukunaga is instead helming the film which begins shooting next month ahead of an April 8th 2020 release. Boyle’s next film is the Beatles-themed musical “Yesterday” opening this Summer.
