"Edith Keeler must die!"

Really?

Why didn't Kirk simply take her with him through the Guardian?

She could have then kept a low profile in the 23rd Century, until she found out he was cheating on her with Gillian Taylor!

History could still continue, set back on course.

She would simply have vanished.

But he and Spock never even discussed that option, even as a "what if?".

Why did Edith Keeler have to die?

Am not knocking the episode, mind you.

Still the best episode of all time i.m.o. - and that ending with "Let's get the hell out of here!" .... Simply phenomenal.

Edith Keeler vanishing would have started conspiracy theories. Did the US government kidnap her because of her pacifist views ?
Her group could have rioted and therefore gained sympathy for their anti war policies.
" Government Scared of Edith Keeler. Did they get rid of her?" newspaper headlines.
All this could have led to American non involvement in WW2 , so back to the problem. Better she died and time is healed.

I remember Harlan Ellison bemoaning Joan Collins' biography, where she remembered playing Edith as....

"A woman who was in love with Adolf Hitler".
