Fun IMDB: The Site We Left Behind....

It has been more than a year since the end of IMDB message boards and I was wondering what do you all feel about this website right now as it has changed so much in the meanwhile...

As a IMDB member for 10 years who used this website in a daily basis, I must say that letterboxd has been such a much better alternative for me. I like to read some of the top and usually short reviews. I never cared before about reading reviews on IMDB, I also like the diary thing, I can check that I've seen 58 movies this year. I prefer the layout on letterboxd too. Simple with all information that I need. Now, IMDB makes me scroll through all people who participated in the movie just to find the duration of that movie. I keep voting on IMDB because the advanced movie search is the only useful thing it still has,

I've also been listening to movie podcasts on Youtube, something that I never cared before. I recomment ColliderVideos.

I can't say that I miss IMDb much at all.

I only ever used IMDb for its various message boards. It was basically where I went for my online social life.

If I wanted information concerning certain films or TV programs, I went to Wikipedia or one of the other websites such as Rotten Tomatoes.

I miss aspects of the imdb message boards. I don't miss what they became.

I still go there pretty often, but mostly when I'm watching something and I need to know who an actor is, or a writer/director, or to remind myself of how tall Karen Gillan is (5' 11" - I like girls who are taller than me).

The scrolling thing is true of IMDb, TMDb, and letterbox. It's a problem with most all contemporary design. What I dislike most about IMDb is all the, and this is also a major problem with contemporary user experience, is all the crap that has nothing to do with what I'm looking for being shoved down my throat because IMDb thinks I might be interested in it--or someone paid for a "sponsored" spot. Every app, every web page, it seems, has a "For You" section now. Red Carpet fashion, what a game show host thinks about the environment, pictures of ugly people I don't want to look at.

I do think IMDb was probably right to shut down the message boards because of trolling, but I never experienced it. I never went outside the Asian forum or the 'discussions' of films I was interested in.

I much prefer letterboxd now, but there's no way to actually discuss anything there. Seems odd. Sad. People aren't too much interested in discussing things any more, it seems. They'd rather just post an opinion and be done with it.

To give an example, in a different context, of the way user interface is going: I watch the news on my iPad when I eat. To turn on closed captioning, there used to be a little icon at the bottom with 'CC' on it that I could tap once to turn them on, tap again to turn them off. Last week they updated the app with a new and improved interface. Now I have to tap the screen to show a little thought bubble icon which I didn't immediately recognize as being superior to an icon with CC (for Closed Captioning) on it, which I have to tap to open a stupid window where I have to slide a toggle to the right to turn on CC, and then tap a 'done' button to dismiss the window. How the fuck did that 'improve' the interface?

I usually only use IMDb nowadays to check film dates and casting. Even their user comments lack a logical functionality (can't sort by rating anymore, etc.).

Also, I recently UN-subscribed to over half a dozen YouTube channels that I used to follow. Really getting tired of the constant and unending crybaby whining about gender diversity and race in cinema. Just review the fucking movie and stop being such a pussy.

There were a handful of comic book channels I unsubbed from because of that. There's one who used SJW in at least 80% of his videos. If I want to hear that crap, I'll go to work.

I miss the individual IMDb message boards for the movies or actors because there are times when I've got so many questions on convoluted plots that the individual message boards for the movies could provide me with an answer. The only problem is when I post a question on a certain not-so-recent movie and it takes months and years for someone to respond and by the time that he/she did, I've already forgotten about the movie. The other thing I miss is the film general board because it was where I get suggestions and some info on a lot of movies, old, or new, or from whatever genre. There are quite a lot of knowledgeable and decent regulars there, only that it has been a favorite hang out place of trolls because of its one of the most active boards of IMDb. But there's no way I'm following them wherever they emigrated. I'll stick with the Asia group.

I now use IMDb for reference and I also occasionally read the user reviews there. I'm having a hard time navigating letterboxd. I don't know, maybe its in the background color that's quite distracting.

I just want to add, even if no one asked. lol. My first "home" was the Dragon Ball: Evolution board. I used to spend literally every day for how many months bantering with a few users there (I can still remember their user names) and it was really fun arguing and nitpicking and fighting over why Justin Chatwin was able to become "Son Goku". Ah............Memories. I can also still remember my first post on the Asia board. I asked why a certain movie, which for me is the most martial-arts-packed movie of all time, never got a theatrical release. Its entitled The Hero, for which I also can't find a page of. It stars a nobody, but definitely has the most exciting kung fu fight scenes. As if every second, there's a fight scene. I also then posted a question, a title of a movie that's similar to I'l Mare (Darn I forgot the title now) and ebossert answered it. Memories.

So, mainly as a reference site. I only posted a few times on the message boards. Certainly nothing like I do here. I didn't notice too much trolling at all, just the presence of occasional SPAM posts that had nothing to with the movie. I seem to recall PETA-types doing this a lot.

I do note, and hate:

I go to check out a casting credit and an advertisement open up and takes over half the page. I have to hunt all over the damn page just to find what I'm looking for, and as far as I can tell, user reviews aren't even on the movie's front page any more. And, I totally agree that

...which is just about useless.

Almost every aspect of our entertainment society is focused on these aspects, rather than just the merits of the product. I include sports in this as well (I'm a huge sports fan). When the recent Olympics started, the main article in the Washington Post to kick off the competition was all about how few black or LGBT people were competing, and how the winter Olympics didn't have enough of either. The hell? Should Norway have a race quota? A gay quota? Should the U.S.? How about, the best damn athletes get to compete. Not "the best gay skiers we can find should make the team."

Yeah, the individual IMDb message boards were the best to find the meaning in the most obscure movies. These message boards had around 3 pages and you could still find interesting posts from 10 years ago.

So, much as I hate Jeff Bezos and did my best to boycott Amazon following the wanton destruction of the IMDb boards, I didn't manage a full boycott, but did cut way back.

So now Donald Trump hates Jeff Bezos and it seems that though no one would listen to thousands of us, millions listen to Donald Trump! So my dilemma is this. I don't think it is within my capability...and if it is I don't want to find out...for me to hate any mortal composed of flesh, or even scum...as much as I hate Donald Trump! The only being I could possibly hate worse would have to be a supernatural creature, like, hmmm, let's see...could it be...SATAN?

So now that Trump hates Bezos, should I start buying from Amazon again? Since I didn't buy that much there before, my major change was cutting out gift cards, for family members who sort of deserved to be cut out anyway. I dunno. Just tossing this out there for suggestions and debate.

You could simply enjoy witnessing one person you dislike going to war against another person you dislike...

And although I can understand your dislike for Trump, why are you picking on poor old Satan?

IMDB changed up actor pages a bite

Just noticed on IMBD that now on any actors page they do not list what tv show episodes they were on. I mean on some they would say they were on 10 or more and give you a list. Now they just show their name, but not the episodes. It's pretty dumb, but I just noticed this when I was looking up a few old shows of Bruce Campbell.

The IMDb has announced its first-ever animated series – “You’re Not a Monster”. Fans will get a sneak peek of the ten-episode, short-form series when its trailer premieres at Comic-Con later this month ahead of the show’s premiere this Fall.


Kelsey Grammer voices a former psychiatrist-turned-vampire in the series who mentors his great-great-grandson ‘Max’ (Eric Stonestreet), a therapist who has inherited his practice. In each 4-5 minute episode, Max treats classic monsters including Frankenstein, The Invisible Man and Medusa as they seek desperately needed therapeutic help.

The series also stars Aparna Nancherla as a demon receptionist, Ellie Kemper as a therapist who thinks Max is imagining everything, and Peter Grosz, Langston Kerman, Joel Kim Booster, Patton Oswalt, Adam Pally, Amber Ruffin, Amy Sedaris and Milana Vayntrub as monsters. The series is created and penned by four-time Emmy-winner Frank Lesser while Lily Stuart Streiff serves as Animation Director.
