Your thoughts on this story....

The TARDIS lands on a nameless desolate planet where The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe learn the native Gonds are ruled by the mysterious and unseen Krotons, where The Krotons chooses their top students to join The Krotons in their machine as their companions. But The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe discover The Krotons are crystalline alien beings and are turning The Gonds mental power into energy and are feeding off it.

This was actually the first ever Patrick Troughton I saw at all, when it was repeated not long after Logopolis in a UK season called "The Five Faces of Doctor Who". which comprised AN UNEARTHLY CHILD, THE KROTONS, THE CARNIVAL OF MONSTERS, THE THREE DOCTORS and LOGOPOLIS

I have to admit, as a reader of the Target Books, I was kind of disappointed with it, thinking Jamie's fight scene lame and this was in the days before remastering so the whole thing was less than pristine and the lack of budget and the dated quality was obvious.

But heck, it's Patrick Troughton and his Doctor, who had just been a character in the books and a few photographs was now on screen and just being Troughton. He still remains my favourite Doctor to this day.

Not a favourite of mine. Too slow, I know the joy of Troughton's episodes is seeing the story slowly evolve, and Troughton is my third favourite Doctor, but this really was slow and The Krotons pretty useless monsters/robots /crystalline entities. Maybe I'm too much if a high brain to appreciate it.
S##t what have I said!
I'm not a high brain...really I'm not.
HIGH BRAIN LOCATED BRING HIM TO THE DYNATROPE.

And I was disappointed with the rubbish "legs" of the Krotons too! :emoji_alien:

That same season of repeats destroyed the Gelgards in THE THREE DOCTORS for me too.

The way they moved outside the UNIT base was awful. Lift, shuffle, shuffle, stop, lower. Repeat.

My Target Book fuelled vision of THE THREE DOCTORS as a visual marvel crumbled to dust.

And I thought Vorg in Carnival of Monsters looked ridiculous too, with that hat! :emoji_angry:

Those Target novelisations are responsible for a lot of disappointment. In my imagination they were big budget special effects extravaganzas and there was never any way the actual episodes could live up to that.

Zoe was a great companion.

I’m lucky enough never to have read a Target novelization, so there were no expectations to ruin with their low budget.
