NBC has confirmed that the proposed reboot of beloved 1990s fantasy series “Xena: Warrior Princess” is dead.

Speaking about the project several months after producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach left the project due to creative differences, NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke tells The Live Feed that the project has stalled:

“Nothing is happening on that right now. We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot. I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title, but the current incarnation of it is dead.”

Unlike the recent craze of revivals with original cast members, this “Xena” was to be a straight-up reboot with a new actress taking on Lucy Lawless’ iconic role. Original show producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi were on board to oversee the project.

Grillo-Marxuach’s exit was due to his vision to explore the romantic relationship between Xena and Gabrielle which could only be shown subtextually in the 1990s.

Salke confirmed that the network remains open to doing a Xena revival at some point down the line: “I need someone to come in with a point of view about what they want to do.”
