Anthony Hopkins will play Pope Benedict and Jonathan Pryce will play Pope Francis in a new Netflix untitled original film about the relationship between the pontiffs.

Acclaimed filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “The Constant Gardener”) will helm the project which explores the opposing visions between two of the most powerful leaders in the Catholic Church, both of whom must address their own pasts and the demands of the modern world.

Anthony McCarten penned the movie which will begin shooting in Argentina this November. Cesar Charlone serves as cinematographer. Dan Lin, Jonathan Eirich and Tracey Seaward are producing.

In 2013 the unthinkable happened: a pope resigned, and another became head of the Vatican. For the first time in six centuries, the Catholic Church had two popes. The new film "The Two Popes" imagines what conversations between the 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI (played by Sir Anthony Hopkins) and Pope Francis (played by Jonathan Pryce) would have sounded like – and since both pontiffs disagreed on most everything, not all of that conversation is polite. Correspondent Tracy Smith talked with Hopkins and Pryce about their star-making movies, faith, and friendship.
