Controversial The Suits

Are "The Suits" in Hollywood Ever a Positive Thing?

  1. Yes, when they reign in an out of control director, spending like an egotistical idiot!

  2. It depends. Sometimes they are within their rights. Sometimes they go too far and spoil a movie.

  3. They are a completely negative thing in moviemaking. I wish we could do without them!

They are often considered the bane of any film production.

    The suits.

They hang around in the background during shooting, counting the dollars and saying NO to new scenes that are, like, essential moments in a film.

But is this negative image fair?

Anybody want to defend the suits?

And can you think of any films that were actually ruined by the intervention of the suits?

When you watch the making of some films, like Alien 3, you come to have a very negative image of these people.

But, at the end of the day, moviemaking is a business and these people are an essential part of the business and are not going to go away.

I guess it depends on the balance of artistic considerations and business considerations. a middle ground between what the director wants to put on screen - and what the studio wants to put on screen at a certain cost?

    A thorny issue nonetheless...

And, as for a film that was ruined by the suits, I would say the above Alien 3, although Fincher's stubbornly slow, endless takes (often because Sigourney thought she could do better) and being too focused on the micro-problems, such as the colour of the blood - and challenging the upper management - did not help matters.

I think as long as we, the public, are not involved or see this happen when it happens, I couldn't care less to be honest. Yes Alien was somewhat ruined by that but in the end the franchise was still a hit. When we see the movie there is no turning back whatever, so as long as they stay in the shadows and not ruin too much, then we don't have much to worry about.

If, and that's a big if, they would stand in the way of artistic freedom and genuinly ruin a movie, then Hollywood and others will probably rise up and protest or something to make it go away or have them step back. They have a boss too you know [IMG]

Spider-Man 3. Raimi had long said that, had the franchise gone on, he would have waited on Venom for a few movies, and built the character up properly, so the story was more coherent and not rushed. The suits forced him to do the movie with him, and it failed.

Superman Lives. Who hasn't heard Kevin Smith's account of having written a screenplay, only to be told it was "too much like a comic book" and "they needed to sell toys"? And then they brought in Tim Burton, and it all fell apart.

Fanboys. Harvey certainly likes to mess with movies, doesn't he? He demanded they take out the cancer storyline because it was depressing, even though it was detrimental to the story! Luckily, the movie exists with it, and it's a great film.

There are many directors who do need someone to reign them in, and yes, the movie industry is just that, an industry. But there are so many times when a movie gets hacked apart by suits who don't understand what makes a good movie, but rather only think about box office (*cough*PG-13 horror movies*cough*).
