It was my introduction to Middle Earth an I do still wish the second half had been made... anyone who could possibly have a problem with John Hurt playing Aragorn needs a good taste test.
OK the pictures were bit better in the BBC radio version, but that took a whole year of weekly listening.

This was the movie that got me into reading Lord of the Rings. I'd read and enjoyed The Hobbit but baulked at the length of Lord of the Rings. I had a friend who had been at me to read it and he dragged me to the movie. Once I'd seen it I understood why he was so keen and settled in to read the books. I've been a fan of the books ever since and remember the movie fondly for convincing me that it was worth the effort.
