Your thoughts and views on this Terry Nation scripted, William Hartnell tale from 1964......

On the planet Marinus, the Doctor and his companions are enlisted by Arbitan to seek out the keys to an ancient and powerful machine. Their quest takes them across time and space; will they be able to return the keys before Marinus falls under the control of the alien Voord? (Originally broadcast in six parts.)

A good concept for a story, having the Doctor and companions chasing around different locations after various items. Sort of a Key to Time concept in a single story. Unfortunately it also demonstrated why stories tended to be in a couple of key locations for 4-6 (or more) episodes. The budget wasn't really up to building half a dozen locations within the space of 6 episodes (although they made a valiant effort). It was also spoilt a bit by the fact that, having spent 6 episodes successfully retrieving the keys, it all turned out to be a waste of time when they had to destroy the machine, which they could have done in the first episode and saved themselves a lot of time (especially given that the Doctor seems to think it was the best choice anyway).

The novelisation.....

I remember that, before it came out, Doctor Who monthly boasted that the cover was going to be something pretty special!

But I guess that it was certainly not your typical cover that readers were used to!

An enjoyable enough romp.

And the Voord should perhaps have made a return appearance at some point...

Oh, wait, they did! :emoji_confused:

The above is from the period when the BBC were suddenly releasing six part stories onto VHS doublepacks, instead of on one tape as they had been doing previously. Suddenly they were sticking only three episodes onto each tape. And charging almost double for this shelf-space stretching exercise!

Cheeky, money grabbing blighters! :emoji_angry:

It took a while, but eventually they remembered that you could in fact get a six parter - or even a 7 parter like AMBASSADORS OF DEATH onto just one tape. :emoji_confounded:

Thankfully this is from that long gone period where the BBC were happy to fleece the fans for every penny they could get out of them. Those days are long......

Oh, wait..... :emoji_confused:

DOCTOR WHO - THE EARLY ADVENTURES DOMAIN OF THE VOORD

After much anticipation, we're pleased and proud to announce the release of the first in our Doctor Who: The Early Adventures series - revisit 1964 with the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan!

The first of Big Finish's new range of Doctor Who: The Early Adventures - Domain of the Voord - comes out today, visiting the early 1960s for a new story using the style and tone of the classic stories that started the whole Doctor Who phenomenon...

The Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara land on the planet Hydra, where Admiral Jonas Kaan leads a vast flotilla of ships trying to elude the vicious race that has invaded and occupied their world. But his ships are being picked off one by one, vessels and crews dragged underwater by an unseen foe.

The time travellers find themselves pitched into battle against the Voord, the ruthless enemy they last encountered on the planet Marinus. As they take the fight to the very heart of the territory now controlled by the Voord the stakes get higher. First they lose the TARDIS... then they lose that which they hold most dear. And that's only the start of their troubles.

In the capital, Predora City, they will learn the truth of what it means to be a Voord. And that truth is horrifying.
