The Darkest Minds
Director: Crispian Mills (“A Fantastic Fear of Everything,” “Slaughterhouse Rulez”)
Cast: Amandla Stenberg, Harris Dickinson, Mandy Moore, Patrick Gibson, Skylan Brooks
Details: First a storyboard artist and then an award-winning director for numerous DreamWorks Animation titles including “Spirit,” “Sinbad” and the “Kung Fu Panda” trilogy, Jennifer Yuh Nelson makes the jump to live-action with this science-fiction thriller based on the young adult novel by Alexandra Bracken and produced by “Stranger Things” alum Shawn Levy.

In the story, a disease kills 98% of America’s children while the surviving 2% develop superpowers. Those survivors are placed in internment camps, including a 16-year-old girl (“The Hunger Games” actress Amandla Stenberg) who escapes custody and joins a group of teens on the run from the government. “Beach Rats” breakout Harris Dickinson also stars along with Gwendoline Christie as a bounty hunter in pursuit of them.

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer and poster for the adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s young adult novel “The Darkest Minds” opening August 3rd.

In the film, teens mysteriously develop powerful new abilities and so are declared a threat by the government and detained. Sixteen-year-old Ruby, one of the most powerful young people anyone has encountered, escapes her camp and joins a group of runaway teens seeking safe haven. They soon wage a resistance, using their collective power to take back control of their future.

Amandla Stenberg, Mandy Moore and Gwendoline Christie co-star in the film which Jennifer Yuh Nelson (“Kung Fu Panda”) will direct and Shawn Levy (“Stranger Things”) will produce.
