A classic that could never be remade?

And if you did remake it, what about that dog's name?

Should history be whitewashed?

And, quite simply, how does it stand up as a movie now?

Seems to be in development hell though (isn't there a thread for that?).

First heard mention of this remake about seven years ago

Yes, trapped in development since 2008.

I can see it being one of those that ends up being made by somebody else maybe, with Jackson having lost enthusiasm and moved on maybe?

Peter Jackson would make me feel better about anything...but some things are so much of their time. I also heard it was Stephen Fry on script duty, maybe he's thought better of it or just got too busy.

How could you possibly improve this film? Secretly we all know the important bits of WWII took place in black and white.

I once had the weird experience of seeing it on American TV - of course they cut every moment which featured the name of the dog - the result was at times barely comprehensible. Surely if Hollywood can "colorise" other old b-&-w classics (not that I think that was in any way a good idea, when it was fashionable), some genius sound geek could do some tasteful re-dubbing so man's best fried could be seen to trade as Nigel. I think that's a splendid name for a lab.
