Third “Cloverfield” Now Opening In April

Previously going by the name “God Particle,” the new “Cloverfield” film has been pushed back to April 20th this year. At last report the film was aiming for a February 2nd release but there had been no promotional photos or trailers released as of this time, one month out.

Earlier today Discussing Film spoke with actress Elizabeth Debicki’s reps who confirmed the film will no longer release in February and no updated release date was currently set. Now, Slashfilm has confirmed with Paramount the new date of April.

The film was initially announced as a February 24th 2017 release, and then was pulled so it could undergo some reshoots supervised by producer J.J. Abrams. The next date was mid-October last year, then the February 2018 release and now April.

Debicki co-stars with Daniel Bruhl, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo and Zhang Ziyi in the project which is the feature directorial debut of Julius Onah. Prior to the reshoots, the story followed a team of astronauts aboard an international space station who find themselves alone after a scientific experiment involving a particle accelerator makes the entire Earth vanish.

Expect the marketing to begin later this month or early February at the latest. “10 Cloverfield Lane” famously didn’t reveal its title or begin its marketing until exactly two months out from release – but was helped along by a superb trailer that got people excited.

Third “Cloverfield” Reveal Is Almost Here

In very early 2016, just days before the release of the trailer and title announcement for “10 Cloverfield Lane,” the website tagruato.jp was updated with a message teasing said arrival. That site was key to the famed viral marketing campaign that tied back to the original J.J. Abrams-produced “Cloverfield” film and had been left running.

Now, the same site has been updated again suggesting the title reveal and trailer drop for the third “Cloverfield” film, previously titled “God Particle,” is imminent. The site’s update teases the film will involve the element of a renewable and revolutionary energy technology created by someone named Ceo Garo Yoshida.

That ties into previously released details about the Julius Onah-directed film which is said to follow a team of astronauts who make a shocking discovery and end up fighting for survival. David Oyelowo, John Krasinski, Elizabeth Debicki, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, Daniel Bruhl and Ziyi Zhang co-star in the movie which opens late April.

Next “Cloverfield” Film Title Revealed?

third-cloverfield-now-opening-in-april-696x464.jpg

After seemingly beginning its viral marketing last week, it looks like the third film in the “Cloverfield” franchise may have a title – “Cloverfield Station”.

The film, previously titled “God Particle” and helmed by Julius Onah, follows astronauts aboard a space station who, after an accident with a particle accelerator, discover that Earth has vanished.

The title report comes from a Reddit thread source who allegedly saw a lighting artist on the film update his LinkedIn resume with the new title. Additionally, the website domains CloverfieldStation.com and CloverfieldStationmovie.com, along with Facebook and Twitter accounts bearing the new title, have been found.

The title of “10 Cloverfield Lane” was revealed mid-late January in 2016 just two months out from release. It’s expected the official title reveal won’t be confirmed by the studio until the trailers are out.

Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo and Zhang Ziyi co-star in the fourth film which is due to open April 20th.

Abrams On “Cloverfield Paradox” Genesis & Future

abrams-talks-cloverfield-paradox-retooling-696x464.jpg

A week on from the surprise post-Superbowl launch of “The Cloverfield Paradox” on Netflix and debate still rages over the quality of the film itself along with the impact of such a launch on both cinema and the franchise’s future.

Subsequent stories have indicated the film was troubled and underwent some major reshoots that didn’t fix its problems, leading to the idea of the Netflix surprise launch. The film’s producer J.J. Abrams was recently asked questions about the project on Facebook and how it came to be. He explains its genesis:

“Originally, it was written by Oren Uziel, who wrote a draft that was its own thing, and was around for a while…we started to think, ‘What are ways that this might fit into the world?’ But when we started shooting the movie, it was still something we were thinking about. Because the idea for the ‘Cloverfield’ series was not so much that it be this narrative throughline, but more that they be these really fun sort of thrill rides.

Like, if you imagine an amusement park, that’s a ‘Cloverfield’ amusement park, and every ride has a different purpose, but they all connect in some way or another. While we were shooting, we were making adjustments. This was a movie that went through many different iterations as it went along.”

Asked where the franchise goes from here, Abrams says they’re talking about a lot of different things at the moment but won’t discuss it presently. Separate reports however suggest at least one if not two more films in the series are already done. One is “Overlord,” a story of U.S. troops who infiltrate a Nazi base in WWII, only to find a supernatural Nazi experiment. That project, which Abrams himself has dubbed “crazy,” is headed for a theatrical release on October 26th.

The other was potentially revealed this past week reports Bloody Disgusting with the original source saying the upcoming Bad Robot project “Kolma,” a Daisy Ridley-led remake of the 2003 Israeli TV movie “Kol Ma,” could well be a fifth “Cloverfield” movie.

Third “Cloverfield” Was Dumped Over ‘Playability’

Netflix’s sudden post-Superbowl release of “The Cloverfield Paradox,” the third film in the popular Paramount Pictures franchise, surprised everyone and certainly got the movie talked about.

Of course, once people saw it talk turned towards how the $40 million blockbuster was so bad that in the process it has damaged both the franchise and to a lesser extent Netflix’s brand for its apparent lack of discerning taste when it comes to content.

Variety has now posted a new interview with Paramount’s Chief Operating Officer Andrew Gumpert who talks about his company’s decision to sell off the film to Netflix:

“The movie was finished, we all reviewed it together with J.J. [Abrams] and his team. We all decided there were things about it that made us have a pause about its commercial playability in the traditional matter. There was an ability for us to be fiscally prudent and monetize [by selling to Netflix]. For fans of ‘Cloverfield,’ the fact is many, many more millions of people saw the movie. It’s a positive on every level.”

While both parties seemingly emerged from the deal happy, and the film was seen by far more people than it would’ve been had it gone a regular theatrical run, the streaming giant has used up its ability to suddenly drop a film and get people excited as subsequent films that try this approach will now be met with a great deal more scepticism.

“The Cloverfield Paradox” is now out on Netflix.
