Your thoughts on this story......

The TARDIS arrives on Earth landing in 16th century Aztec society. Barbara goes off exploring - despite the Doctor's orders not to wander off - and is taken away by the high priest Autloc who believes she is the reincarnation of the goddess Yetaxa. They believe it is a sign that the rains - which are late - will now come. The high priest of sacrifice Tlotoxl recruits Ian to lead their army but he finds he has a rival in Ixta. Ian is less than comfortable with his role when he learns that they are to deliver the human sacrifice to the high priest at the rain ceremony. The Doctor emphasizes that they must not interfere with Aztec rituals, something that does not sit well with Barbara.

That was the first Doctor Who serial I ever saw, and I knew I was going to like this program. An educational historical (sadly there are no more of these) with an engaging story, and you didn't even have to know the characters beforehand to care about them. My only beef with the story is Ian's super fighting skill, especially in besting an Aztec warrior. He's a science teacher, not a judo expert!

Yes, but Ian was old enough to have possibly seen action during WWII.

If so, then he would have undergone military training, which might possibly have included unarmed combat.

The respect with which he treats Cameca here is baffling.

Something dreadful must have happened to him afterwards to make him decide that women were made of glass and should spring clean for a living, at the risk of a jolly good smacked bottom!
