Spaceballs is a 1987 American science fiction parody film co-written, produced and directed by Mel Brooks. Starring Brooks, Bill Pullman, John Candy, and Rick Moranis, the film also features Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, and the voice of Joan Rivers. In addition to Brooks in a supporting role, the film also features Brooks regulars Dom DeLuise and Rudy De Luca in cameo appearances.

The film was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on June 24, 1987, and was met with a mixed reception. It has since become a cult classic on video and one of Brooks's most popular films. Its setting and characters parody the original Star Wars trilogy, as well as other sci-fi franchises including Star Trek, Alien, and the Planet of the Apes films.

In February 2015, Brooks said that he would like to make a sequel to be released after the next Star Wars movie and hopes that Moranis would reprise his role. A sequel with the whole cast is not possible since John Candy, Joan Rivers, Dick Van Patten and Dom DeLuise are all dead. his proposed film, Brooks said, may be called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.

I really do adore this film, but I've always had an issue with the fact that this seems to be so many people's go to for Brooks' work. The humor is great,l but it never felt, to me, anyway, quite as clever as his earlier films. I rank BLAZING SADDLES, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, THE PRODUCERS, HIGH ANXIETY and SILENT MOVIE much higher. I also am saddened by the fact that his next two films, while funny, don't hold up as well for me. I still love them, and watch them, but I don't feel the love for them that I do for his earlier works.

I enjoyed this film so much when I was young. A few years ago I bought the dvd and watched it again, it was a bit of a let down.

Moranis To Reprise His “Spaceballs” Role





Having effectively quit acting two decades ago, “Ghostbusters” and “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” star Rick Moranis will make a rare voice-only appearance in an upcoming episode of “The Goldbergs” sitcom.

In an episode that pays tribute to 1987 Mel Brooks comedy “Spaceballs,” Moranis will reprise his iconic villain Dark Helmet in the episode which will air May 9th.

Moranis voices the character in one of young film enthusiast Adam Goldberg’s dreams, as Adam (Sean Giambrone) ‘encounters Dark Helmet storming his bedroom to battle with the Schwartz’.

Adam “promises to get a sequel to Spaceballs produced before waking up.” “The Goldbergs” creator Adam F. Goldberg reportedly worked for several weeks to get a commitment from Moranis.
