Hope is Peter “Junior” Potter (son of the original’s “Painless” Peter Potter), a Harvard graduate who travels to the Wild West to claim his inheritance. He soon finds out that his equally faint-hearted dad has left massive debts and a town baying for blood; Jane Russell is the mysterious thief and Roy Rogers the singing cowboy entangled in his troubles.
Arguably Hope at his funniest and most quick-witted, this send-up of western clichés and conventions is much more hit than miss. A terrific follow-up to the funny original; Rogers is a tremendous sport, sending up his own on-screen persona. Highlight has him singing “A Four-Legged Friend” to Trigger (who famously shares a bed with Bob!).
