A lone gunman unleashed a rapid-fire barrage of bullets from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel late Sunday, killing at least 59 people and injuring more than 500 others attending a country music festival below, officials said.

It was the worst mass shooting in modern American history, and Stephen Craig Paddock was "solely responsible for this heinous act," Assistant Clark County Sheriff Todd Fasulo told reporters Monday night.

Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, fired shot after shot from his room at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino down on the crowd of about 22,000, sending terrified concertgoers running for their lives.

"We heard what sounded like firecrackers going off. Then all of a sudden we heard what sounded like a machine gun. People started screaming that they were hit," witness Meghan Kearney told MSNBC. "When we started running out, there were probably a couple hundred [people] on the ground."

She added: "People kept dropping and dropping. ... People were getting shot one foot away from us. People were trying to save their friends. There were gunshots everywhere. Helping them would've meant that we got shot, too."

Yellowstone super volcano could blow faster than thought, destroy all of mankind

Arizona State University researchers have analyzed minerals around the super volcano at Yellowstone National Park and have come to a startling conclusion. It could blow much faster than previously expected, potentially wiping out life as we know it.

According to National Geographic, the researchers, Hannah Shamloo and Christy Till, analyzed minerals in fossilized ash from the most recent eruption. What they discovered surprised them – the changes in temperature and composition only took a few decades, much faster than the centuries previously thought.


“We expected that there might be processes happening over thousands of years preceding the eruption,” said Till said in an interview with the New York Times.

NASA WANTS TO PREVENT THE YELLOWSTONE SUPERVOLCANO FROM DESTROYING THE US

The supervolcano last erupted about 630,000 years ago, according to National Geographic. Prior to that, it was 1.3 million years ago, per a report from ZME Science.

If another eruption were to take place, the researchers found that the supervolcano would spare almost nothing in its wrath. It would shoot 2,500 times more material than Mount St. Helen did in 1980 and could cover most of the continguous U.S. in ash, possibly putting the planet into a volcanic winter.

The new discovery, which was presented in August after a previous version of the study, comes after another study in 2011 which found the magma reservoir in Yellowstone has moved considerably, gaining about 10 inches in seven years.

"It's an extraordinary uplift, because it covers such a large area and the rates are so high," the University of Utah's Bob Smith, an expert in Yellowstone volcanism, told National Geographic six years ago.

Despite the concerns about an eruption happening relatively soon, Shamloo told The Times that more research needed to be done before a definite conclusion could be drawn.

In June, the supervolcano was hit with more than 400 earthquakes in one week, though researchers cautioned it was nothing nothing to be alarmed about.

For its part, NASA is working on a way to prevent the supervolcano from destroying mankind, including trying to cool the magma before it spills over.

8 dead in New York City truck attack

8 dead in New York City truck attack; mayor calls it act of terror

NEW YORK -- Police and witnesses say a man deliberately drove a rented truck onto a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, killing eight people and seriously injuring 11 others, then emerged from the vehicle screaming and brandishing imitation firearms before he was shot by police. The suspect was wounded and taken into custody.

"This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians," Mayor Bill de Blasio said. He called it "a very painful day in our city."

"Today there was a loss of innocent life in lower Manhattan," NYPD commissioner James O'Neill said at a Tuesday press conference.

Sources identify suspect as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov

Law enforcement sources identified the suspect to CBS News as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, a 29-year-old truck driver who has lived in Tampa, Florida, and New Jersey. He came to the U.S. in 2010 from Uzbekistan.

Sources tell CBS News' senior investigative producer Pat Milton the suspect yelled "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is great," when he exited the truck.

He doesn't appear to have an exenstive criminal background, CBS News' Jeff Pegues reports. Both the FBI and the NYPD are "digging" into Saipov's background, Pegues reports.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the attack appeared to be a "lone wolf" incident with no apparent link to a wider terrorist plot. Cuomo, O'Neill and de Blasio praised the work of an officer who they said stopped the assailant before more people were hurt.

The incident occurred at West Street and Chambers Street at 3:05 p.m.

The vehicle entered the pedestrian/bike path at Houston St., a few blocks north of Chambers Street on Manhattan's west side. The truck drove down the bike path for about four blocks, striking cyclists and pedestrians before veering back into traffic lanes and striking a school bus and another vehicle.

Four people on board the school bus were injured, CBS New York reports. Officials said Tuesday they were two adults and two children.

The suspect then emerged brandishing what police called "imitation firearms." A pellet gun and a paintball gun were recovered at the scene, O'Neill said.

An officer shot him in the abdomen and he was transported to the hospital.

Six people were pronounced dead at the scene and two others died at the hospital, officials said. At least 11 others suffered injuries that were described as serious but not life-threatening.

O'Neill said statements the suspect made and the nature of the attack led investigators to believe it was an act of terror. He did not specify what those statements were.

A harrowing scene

'A vehicle drove straight down a bicycle path heading south in Manhattan just mowing everything down," witness Greg Ahl told 1010 WINS radio. "It looks like a vehicle drove down the bicycle path and ran everything over."

An Associated Press photographer on the scene reported seeing at least two bodies lying motionless on the path beneath tarps.

"I noticed along the bike path a bunch of wrecked bicycles and as I drove it was just more and more completely and totally wrecked bicycles and people mulling around to the side. I must've seen 30 or 40 bicycles like that," Ahl said.

A man who was riding in an Uber along the West Side Highway near Chambers Street says he saw several bleeding people on the ground.

The truck involved in the crash had been rented from Home Depot, although the company said it could not confirm if the suspect had rented the vehicle. The company said it is cooperating with police.

A large number of police vehicles could be seen near West Street and Chambers Street, which is near a community college, a high school and a few blocks north of the National Sept. 11 Memorial. Nearby Stuyvesant High School was on lockdown as a precaution, the station reports.

Residents were cautioned to avoid the area and to expect many emergency personnel in the area.

The NYPD tweeted that there will be increased police presence throughout the city, including at the annual Halloween parade, which draws huge crowds every year in Greenwich Village.

President Trump's response

The White House says President Trump has been briefed on the incident.

Mr. Trump tweeted his first public response: "We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!"

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says the president, a New York native, "will be continually updated as more details are known."

Sanders says, "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, whose city suffered two terrorist car attacks earlier this year, issued a statement saying "London stands in grief and solidarity with the great city of New York."

Man pulls gun in McDonald's drive-thru when he can't get a McMuffin

Police in Ohio say they're looking for a man who pulled out a gun after being told by a McDonald's drive-thru worker there were no Egg McMuffin sandwiches available.

Police say the incident occurred shortly after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at a McDonald's in Warren, about 60 miles southeast of Cleveland.

The worker told police that two men inside the car appeared to be around 20 years old. She said the driver called her a vulgar name after pulling out the gun and then cursed at her again before driving away.

Warren police hope to identify the men using surveillance video footage.

I grew up with a dad who was a gun owner, and a hunter, and for a while, a member of the NRA. He taught my sister and I gun safety, and drilled it into us that guns were not toys. I also had two parents who taught my sister and I common sense. While I no longer have any desire to use guns in any capacity, I know there are many like my dad and other guys I have known who aren't the idiots who are used as poster children for those who are anti-gun. But the caveat is that, in the end, many of those who end up going on a shooting spree were once one of those "lawful gun owners" who no one ever suspected.

And, let's face it, how many other countries do you hear about this happening in?

I know you wrote this with the utmost sincerity, but the way it played in my head was with the same inflection that Farrell says "That escalated quickly".

Yeah, I remember common sense. Of course, it was much more common when I was a kid.

When I was a child, I spent six years travelling around the country with my parents. Along the way, my father - a former WWII soldier, state copper and federal police officer - bought a .303 with a telescopic sight from a local cop he was friends with. He bought it for protection because there was some civic unrest in various parts of the country. However, after our travels ended, he sold it again.

He wasn't the sort to act foolishly with a firearm and when I was allowed to use it, it was under strict supervision. He also only ever threatened one person with it - and luckily for that person - they were wise enough not to test my father's resolve in the matter.

HBO’s “Sharp Objects” Trailer Arrives


The official full trailer has arrived for HBO’s eight-episode limited series “Sharp Objects” starring Oscar nominee Amy Adams.

Based on the book by “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn, Adams plays a journalist who returns to her small hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.

Trying to put together a psychological puzzle from her past, she finds herself identifying with the young victims a bit too closely. Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Elizabeth Perkins, Matt Craven, Henry Czerny, Taylor John Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Madison Davenport co-star.

Marti Noxon (“Dietland,” “UnREAL”) serves as showrunner and wrote several episodes, as did Flynn. Jean-Marc Vallée directed all of the episodes and co-edited the series which debuts July 8th.

Alex Hirsch Signs Major Netflix Deal





“Gravity Falls” creator Alex Hirsch has closed a new multi-year development deal with Netflix with the celebrated writer/producer to exclusively create new animated series and feature films for the streaming giant.

One key difference, Hirsch’s latest projects will be geared more towards adult viewers, rather than children. Hirsch says in a statement: “I couldn’t be more excited to join the amazing roster of talent coming to Netflix. Plus it couldn’t hurt to be on The Algorithm’s good side before The Singularity hits. Awesome things are coming!”

Hirsch recently contributed to the scripts for the upcoming films “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “Detective Pikachu”.

Brazil's national museum hit by huge fire





A fire has gutted the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, the oldest scientific institution in the country.

Most of the 20 million items it contained, including the oldest human remains ever found in the Americas, are believed to have been destroyed.

The cause of the blaze is not known. No injuries have been reported.

The museum, located in a building that once served as the residence for the Portuguese royal family, celebrated its 200th anniversary this year.

The fire started on Sunday evening, after the facility had closed for the day.

Aerial images broadcast on Brazilian television showed it spreading throughout the building.
