Did we really need this film?
Not really.

Did we need to know what made Hannibal into Hannibal?
I hate giving too much backstory to villains if they don't need it. That was my biggest complaint about Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN. I read the novel before I saw the movie, and it actually worked for me. Was it necessary? Not really, but it was kind of interesting, if only because Lecter is such a cool character. But in the end, we really didn't need to know about what made him that way.

And what of the young actor replacing Anthony Hopkins?
He was passable. I didn't hate him, so there's that.

A worthy substitute?
Meh. He was okay.

If I understand correctly, Harris wrote the novel and subsequent screenplay only because the film producer wanted to do a prequel. Worst reason to write a book. Also, I don't know why he wrote two very different works. The movie is so much different from his novel. I guess he got his paycheck, so...good for him?
