Julius Avery To Helm New “Flash Gordon”
“Overlord” and “Son of a Gun” director Julius Avery has been set to both pen and direct “Flash Gordon,” a new film adaptation of the classic sci-fi serial hero of page and screen which is being setup at 20th Century Fox.
Avery reported loved the “Flash Gordon” comic and pitched his take which the studio sparked to it and set him to helm. The project once had “Kingsman” helmer Matthew Vaughn set to direct but he will now only produce alongside John Davis.
Scribes J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay penned a script for Vaughn’s version back in 2015 but it’s expected that will be thrown out in favour of Avery’s new take.
“Flash Gordon” dates back to 1934, when it was created by famed comic strip artist Alex Raymond, and for decades after appeared in movie serials, animated fare, TV shows and the famed ultra camp 1980 feature helmed by Mike Hodges and boasting music by Queen.
Gordon is an adventurer who, with the lovely Dale Arden and mad scientist Hans Zasrkov, ends up on the planet Mongo fighting its tyrannical ruler, Ming the Merciless.
The announcement comes as Aussie filmmaker Avery’s WW2 Nazi zombie film “Overlord” is getting rave reviews, pulling in an 88% on
Rotten Tomatoes.
