The Eternals are a fictional race of humanity appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. They are described as an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created sentient life on Earth. The original instigators of this process, the alienCelestials, intended the Eternals to be the defenders of Earth, which leads to the inevitability of war against their destructive counterparts, the Deviants. The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby and made their first appearance in The Eternals #1 (July 1976).


Publication history

In 1970, Jack Kirby left Marvel Comics to work at DC Comics, where he began the saga of the New Gods, an epic story involving mythological and science fiction concepts, and planned to have a definite ending. However, the saga was left incomplete after the cancellation of the titles involved. Kirby began The Eternals when he returned to Marvel. The Eternals' saga was thematically similar to the New Gods', and the series was also eventually canceled without resolving many of its plots. Writers Roy Thomas and Mark Gruenwald used the Eternals in a Thor storyline that climaxed in Thor #301,[1] resolving those lingering plotlines. Subsequent to the Thor storyline, the Eternals (and the mythology connected to them) have appeared or been mentioned in numerous Marvel comics. In particular, the Celestials' experiment on humanity has been used to explain how certain humans can develop super-powers. The Titanians (created by Jim Starlin) and Uranians (created by Stan Lee)[2] were later retconned as being Eternals as well.

The Eternals returned for a 12-issue miniseries in 1985 under writer Peter B. Gillis and penciler Sal Buscema.[3][4] According to comic-book historian Peter Sanderson, "editor in chief Jim Shooter disliked Gillis’s scripts, so Walter Simonson wrote the final four issues."[5]

Neil Gaiman,[6][7] with artist John Romita, Jr.,[8] created a 2006 miniseries, which helped bring the Eternals' role in the modern Marvel Universe up-to-date.[9] Originally solicited as a six-issue series, an extra issue was added to the run, because, according to editor Nick Lowe, "There was too much story to fit into the structure we set for ourselves. Neil was starting issue five and told me that he might need a seventh issue. He just had too much story to fit in six issues (even with the first and sixth double-sized)."[10]

The first ongoing series since Kirby's run was announced at the San Diego Comic Con in 2007.[11] It is written by Charles and Daniel Knauf,[12][13][14] with art by Daniel Acuña,[15][16] and the first issue was cover dated August 2008. In late 2008 Marvel also published an Eternals Annual by writer Fred Van Lente and artist Pascal Alixe, in which the Eternals come into conflict with the Young Gods.[17] On February 27, 2009, Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada confirmed that the ongoing series had been cancelled

Antecedents

• Arthur C. Clarke's book Childhood's End from 1953 provided large inspiration, including the idea of "Overlords" who control Earth's fate and will reveal themselves further after a 50-year waiting period, the idea of demons being humanity's memory of another species, and the "Overmind" concept which seems to influence the comic's "Uni-mind".
• Erich von Däniken's book Chariots of the Gods, a 1968 non-fiction best-seller, postulated the concept of alien gods as real. Kirby acknowledged in dialogue with fans of the Eternals that he owed some debt to Däniken's book.
• The Hurricane and Mercury, two characters of Timely Comics, the 1940s predecessor of Marvel, were retconned as being guises of the Eternal Makkari.
• Thematically, the Eternals were similar to another Kirby creation, the New Gods — another group of ancient godlike beings in an epic struggle with their opposites, with humanity caught in between.

The Eternal

The Eternal is a series from Marvel's MAX imprint written by Chuck Austen, based on an idea he had been working on for a while: "I pitched this back when I first started working at Marvel, but Joe Quesada was against doing it. He saw no future in this particular old Kirby concept."[30] Austen described the plot as involving "Ikaeden, the leader of the Eternals, who arrives on Earth at the dawn of man, and evolves humankind from homo-erectus so he can use them as slaves to mine raw materials for the Celestials, his bosses, basically," as well as "Kurassus, who is the second-in-command of the mining mission, and who is determined to undermine Ikaeden and kill Ikaeden's precious slave-girl and son."[30] In an interview with Newsarama he gave an outline of his planned plot:

In this version, we take some of the concepts from [the original series] and build around them, throwing away some stuff and keeping others. We're actually going back in time to see Ikaris birth and development on Earth, meet his parents, and then move forward into contemporary time. When we get to contemporary time, the Celestials return to judge Earth, but there's no fifty-year 'study and evaluation period.' We've already been judged and found wanting, too violent to be allowed to flourish and spread, and Ikaris and the others have to stop the Celestials, who consider us their property, from destroying the entire planet as they have done to many others, including another in the Solar System.[31]

Originally planned as an ongoing series,[30] it was cancelled after six issues.[32]

Reception

Reception of the series was mixed. Peter Sanderson calls it "a ghastly mini-series ... which utilized the names like 'Eternal' and 'Celestial' from Kirby’s series but otherwise had nothing to do with it."[5] Les Bowman on ICv2, replying to specific concerns about the sexual content, said that "[m]uch like the Rawhide Kid, Marvel's editorial staff has decided to completely wreck the heritage of a well liked character, or in the case of the Eternals, a group, by perverting it for the reason of free press coverage."[33] Reviews at Comics Bulletinwere much more positive,[34][35][36] with the one for the final issue saying that the cancellation of the title was "a damn shame because it was the only MAX series to live up to the billing of the imprint" and that "If you want to read a 1980s EPIC style comic buy this issue and all the others that came before, I doubt there will ever be a trade."[37]

• The Eternals are represented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the presence of Thanos, who first appeared in the mid-credits scene of The Avengers (2012), played by Damion Poitier. Josh Brolin was later cast in the role, portraying Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Brolin will reprise the role in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and its sequel (2019).

Marvel Rumored To Develop “Eternals”





Beyond next year’s fourth “Avengers” film, Marvel Studios is staying pretty quiet about where they intend to go with their film slate from late 2019 onwards. We do know there’ll be another “Spider-Man” and a third (and possibly final) “Guardians of the Galaxy,” but beyond that it’s all up for grabs.

Now a new rumor has popped up at Bleeding Cool which suggests one such film could be “Eternals,” a movie based on the characters created by Jack Kirby in the mid-1970s. The site claims “we are to expect an announcement imminently”.

In the Marvel Comics, an alien race called the Celestials visited Earth five million years ago and performed genetic experiments on early forms of life, unlocking the ability for super-powered mutations to exist and creating the Eternals and the Deviants in the process.

The two became enemies, and the story gets stranger from there. We’ve seen some Eternals in the films to date – one in each of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films (one in the Infinity Stones flashback scene, and Kurt Russell’s Ego), and potentially Thanos himself.

Marvel’s “The Eternals” Scores New Scribes





Matthew and Ryan Firpo have been hired to adapt the Jack Kirby-created comic book “The Eternals” for Marvel Studios.

The hiring follows recent rumors of a film version of “The Eternals” being in development at the studio, one of the first original properties in the works for the post-fourth “Avengers”-era MCU.

In the comics created in 1976, cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on primitive humans, creating the super-powered and near-immortal beings and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants.

The two races moved behind the scenes throughout human history while also engaging in various cosmic powerplays.

The Firpo’s spec script “Ruin” topped the 2017 Black List, that has Gal Gadot attached and follows an ex-Nazi captain who, to atone for his crimes, hunts down and kills the members of his former SS squad.

Chloe Zhao To Helm Marvel’s “Eternals”





Filmmaker Chloe Zhao, who helmed one of 2018’s most acclaimed films with “The Rider,” has been set to direct “The Eternals” film at Marvel Studios.

Marvel’s “The Eternals” To Film Next Fall?





A tentative start of filming date of September 2019 has apparently been set for Marvel Studios’ “The Eternals” feature according to That Hashtag Show.

Chloe Zhao is slated to direct the project which would appear to still be aiming for a November 6th 2020 release, which makes the filming start date about right.

Matthew and Ryan Firpo’s script will focus on the super-powered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials.

Marvel is expected to assemble a diverse cast for the project.

Marvel Chief Happy “Eternals” Are Unknown





Beyond the second “Spider-Man Homecoming” film next July, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains a big question mark and Marvel Studios is not giving away its future schedule past that point.

One project in active development though is a film based on the title “The Eternals,” a set of Marvel galactic characters barely known outside of comic fandom (and not well known within said fandom). Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige tells Bionic Buzz he wouldn’t have it any other way as it allows people to come into this fresh:

“Your reaction about not being familiar with the Eternals is perfect, because most people weren’t familiar with Guardians [of the Galaxy] and believe it or not there were people that were not familiar with Avengers or with Iron Man. So for us, its finding great stories, whether people have heard of them or not, and bring them to the big screen in as amazing a way as we can.”

Created by the late Stan Lee’s frequent collaborator Jack Kirby, Eternals a fictional race that go all the way back to Earth’s creation with The Celestials creating the group in order to protect the planet. Chloe Zhao is slated to direct the project which could arrive as early as November 2020.

Marvel’s “Eternals” To Feature A Gay Lead





With “Captain Marvel,” Marvel Studios finally gives us one of their standalone superhero films with a female lead this time. Now a new report suggests the studio may be making progress in another way.


That Hashtag Show reports that the studio is currently searching for an actor aged 30-49 who ‘physically looks like a superhero’ to fill one of the lead roles in Chloe Zao’s upcoming film adaptation of “The Eternals”.

More specifically they claim that while the studio is open to performers of any ethnicity, the would “prefer the role to go to an openly gay actor”. Said report doesn’t hint as to which member of the team the actor would play but apparently it will not be Sersi, Ikaris or Piper.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige stated during press rounds for “Ant-Man and The Wasp” last year that the studio was working on adding a new LGBTQ character to the Marvel mix in the near future.

Zhao has apparently previously expressed interest in casting “The Umbrella Academy” breakout Cameron Britton as Ikaris, while Polish actor Tomasz Kot is also apparently being looked at for a supporting role.

Filming is still reportedly scheduled to kick off in September in the UK.

Angelina Jolie In Talks For Marvel’s “Eternals”





Oscar winner Angelina Jolie is reportedly in talks to join “The Rider” director Chloe Zhao’s new film adaptation of Jack Kirby’s “The Eternals” comics for Marvel Studios and Disney Pictures.

Kumail Nanjiani In Talks For Marvel’s “Eternals”





Comedian and Oscar nominee Kumail Nanjiani (“The Big Sick) is in negotiations to star alongside Angelina Jolie in “The Eternals” for Marvel Studios.

Chloe Zhao is directing the superhero ensemble project based on the 1976 comic series by Jack Kirby and later revived bt Neil Gaiman.

The story follows the superpowered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous offshoot known as the Deviants that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials.

Jolie is rumored to be playing Sersi, an outgoing Eternal who has not been afraid to move amongst humankind. Nanjiani’s character is unknown.

Nanjiani will soon be seen in “Men in Black: International” and “Stuber”.

In terms of MCU films “Black Widow” and “The Eternals” are seemingly set for next year, “Shang-Chi” and “Doctor Strange 2” for 2021, and “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” for 2022 with further “Black Panther,” “Spider-Man” and “Captain Marvel” sequels likely.

Feige & Cast Tease Marvel’s “Eternals” Plans

Of the Phase Four slate of Marvel Studios’ films, one of the big question marks remains that of “Eternals” – the film about what is effectively a race of gods in the Marvel universe and a film with an ensemble focus and a real push into the cosmic angle – arguably more so than “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Thor” have gone.

Speaking to Good Morning America this week, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the cast of the film discussed the diversity and inclusivity which is a key part of the film, including the first deaf character and the first major openly gay superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In fact, Feige says the gay character goes beyond token sexuality: “He’s married. He’s got a family. And that is just part of who he is.” While it has yet to be confirmed which character he’s referring to, the most common speculation has been that of Richard Madden’s Ikaris character.
Another big bit of news about the film revealed on the weekend is that of Kit Harington joining the cast, the former “Game of Thrones” regular signing to play Dane Whitman, aka the Black Knight. Feige hints that the role is designed in a way that the character could expand to other MCU franchises: “We were so happy when [Harington] agreed to join. And it is a part that could perhaps grow into something else in the future.”
Brian Tyree Henry, who plays the super fast eternal Phastos in the film spoke with Variety and had fun contemplating an Avengers vs. Eternals match-up: “Without us, there would be no Avengers. There would be no Guardians of the Galaxy. There would be no galaxy. So you’re welcome, Chris Pratt’s character… we’re gods, if they want to throw down they wouldn’t win. But it’s all good. Not trying to start no beef, no street beef but…” and then co-star Kumail Nanjiani interjected with: “but we would destroy them.”

Have to agree.

I would rather see a movie about those strange beings than yet another superhero epic, no matter how well made.

Box Office overkill of the more epic of these movies has almost burned me out on the whole genre, apart from oddities like JOKER.
